Dear Mr. Knightley – Book Review
Everything in our lives happens for a reason – even if it isn’t always to our liking or according to our plan. That is one of the many discoveries that await Samantha Moore in Dear Mr. Knightley – the brilliant debut novel from Katherine Reay!
Dear Mr. Knightley is a unique coming-of-age story about a 23-year old orphan – Samantha – who spent her life in foster care. To shield herself from the world around her, Samantha retreats into the world of books, preferring to live vicariously through her favorite characters from literature – especially Jane Austin! Instead of developing her own personality, she finds it easier to adapt the personas of her favorite fictional characters.
But all of that changes when Father John – her friend from Grace House – presents her with an offer she shouldn’t refuse – at least not more than once.
A mysterious benefactor has agreed – based on Father John’s recommendation – to provide Samantha with a full scholarship to Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism on one condition.
The director of the foundation – the so-called “Mr. Knightley”– requires Samantha to regularly write him personal progress letters reassuring him that the decision to fund her education was the right one.
Samantha, of course, has serious doubts about this offer. She wants to make her own way in the world. She wants to leave Grace House. She also wants to choose her own course of study. But the terms are set in stone, and Samantha finds herself embarking on an unforgettable journey of self-discovery, documented in a series of letters to the mysterious “Mr. Knightley”.
Dear Mr. Knightley is an endearing epistolary novel that draws you in from the very first letter and leaves you hanging on to every word, eager to see how Samantha’s life will unfold.
Regardless of whether you are a Jane Austen lover – a fan of literary fiction – or a fan of women’s contemporary fiction – Dear Mr. Knightley is a wonderful story that you won’t want to miss!
I rate this book 5/5 Stars.
