Daisies Are Forever – Book Review
If you enjoy historical fiction – particularly novels whose inspiration are based on real people and real events – than Liz Tolsma is an author whose works you will want to get to know. In her second book, Daises Are Forever, Liz has once again written a World War II novel whose events revolve around true-life stories told by her aunt and others that must not be forgotten!
Daises Are Forever takes us to the end of World War II to the country of Prussia in 1945, when Hitler is still in power, and yet – his fall is imminent.
Through the eyes of Gisela Cramer – an American who is residing in East Prussia with her ailing grandfather and her cousin, Ella Reinhardt – we are given a first-hand account of the devastation and heartbreak that war brings as Gisela and those around her must make life-altering choices on how to keep themselves and those they love alive.
When the Red Army invades East Germany, the residents of their town are forced to flee their homes to escape to safety in Berlin. However, Ella refuses to leave. Instead, she sends her two young daughters to safety with Gisela.
Along the way, Gisela meets Mitch Edwards – an escaped British POW – and pretends to be his wife in order to preserve his safety among the other Germans. The journey is fraught with danger – particularly as Kurt – a wounded German soldier who has feelings for Gisela – tries to uncover the “truth” behind her marriage.
Daisies Are Forever is a story of fear and faith – of courage and compassion – of humanity and the darker side of human nature. The book reminds us that war is often more complex than we think – and that even in the darkest places, hope can be found.
If you enjoyed Liz’s first book, Snow On The Tulips, you won’t want to miss Daisies Are Forever. If you are new to the Woman of Courage Series, I encourage you to read them as a set (even though the books are written as stand-alone novels) because they paint an indelible portrait of the people living during those trying times.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
