Good And Angry: Redeeming Anger, Irritation, Complaining, And Bitterness – Book Review

Do you have a problem with anger? Before you answer that question, perhaps you need to re-examine your beliefs about anger and explore the ways that anger manifests itself in your life. Perhaps you are not free to express the anger that you sometimes rightfully feel because you have a rage-a-holic in your life who makes self-expression feel like a very unsafe thing. Perhaps you tend to hold things in until you simply cannot contain things any longer and some tiny thing sets you off.

Perhaps you do not identify yourself as an angry person – but, if you were to be totally honest with yourself, you might recognize that you have the tendency to be a little passive-aggressive at times – or to become irritated a little too easily – or to have difficulty letting go of things that happened to you ten, twenty, even thirty or more years ago!

If so, then consider Good And Angry: Redeeming Anger, Irritation, Complaining, And Bitterness by David Powlison a godsend for your spiritual and emotional well-being!

Good And Angry provides us with a biblical perspective on anger in all of its many manifestations, helps us to identify any known or hidden issues with anger that we may be experiencing in our own lives, and provides us with constructive guidance and examples on how to deal with anger in our own lives. As the Bible teaches us, anger in and of itself is not a sin – it is how we choose to respond to it that determines whether or not our response is godly or ungodly.

Good And Angry is not the type of book that you pick up and read in a few sittings – rather, it is a book that you read, digest, and work through over a period of time. The book is deep – it explores issues such as what is anger, how do we change, and how do we tackle the hard cases including dealing with anger at ourselves and at God. At the end of each chapter there are “Making It Your Own” questions to help you delve into the material and apply it to your life.

Change is challenging – but with God, all things are possible, If you want to learn how you can be both Good And Angry at the same time – just as Jesus was able to do – then I recommend this book to you!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book sounds helpful and honest.

  3. Sounds like a very insightful book. I have a chronic illness and discovered many years ago that negative emotions like anger only make me sicker, so I try hard to stay positive…but. yes, like you said here, there are certainly resentments from long ago that still gnaw at me or thoughtless actions from family members that can still spark that bitterness & resentment. I think letting go is something we can all use help with from time to time!

    Thanks for the review –

You are so right Sue! Sometimes the ability to let go of long-standing bitterness and resentment starts with the willingness to let God know we want to let go of it all but we need His help to do so. Hope you have the opportunity to pick up this book! 🙂
