SOW 8: Great Is Thy Faithfulness Part 1

Over the years, I have truly come to develop an appreciation for the great hymns of our faith. I am amazed, as I study their lyrics, of the biblical truths many hymns contain. While our hymnals contain many wonderful songs, there are three I consider the trifecta of hymns: Amazing Grace, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and How Great Thou Art. As we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving, I invite you to join me in celebrating God’s great faithfulness to His people.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness was penned by Thomas Obadiah Chisholm (1866-1960) in 1923, when he was 57. Like many of us, Chisholm experienced many difficult circumstances. After becoming a pastor at age 36, Chisholm had to step down a year later due to poor health. Although he endured great physical and financial challenges throughout his life, Chisholm found tremendous solace in Scripture. Over the years, Chisholm’s relationship with God deepened as he learned he could depend on God to meet his every need. This hymn is based on Chisholm’s favorite verse in Scripture, Lamentations 3:22-23:

Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

At age 75, Chisholm wrote:

“My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.”

This week, I invite you to reflect on how much God loves you as you listen to Avalon’s stirring rendition of Great Is Thy Faithfulness. Next week, I’ll share another amazing rendition of this song, along with the lyrics and some additional information, as we count the days until Thanksgiving!
