How Do You Handle Blog Comments?

Welcome to What’s On Your Mind – a place to share your thoughts on a variety of relevant topics! So far, we’ve discussed Blog Hops and Blogging Challenges, and I’m thrilled by the quality of feedback you’re providing! Keep up the great work – I’ll be tackling many of the topics you’ve mentioned in the months to come!

This week’s topic, Blog Comments, was inspired by my friend Donna from Brynwood Needleworks. She left the following comment on last week’s post:

My biggest blogging challenge is getting back to each reader who leaves a comment. Do I need to answer every one, every time? Will people be upset if I don’t? I invest time into my blog post, thinking that IT is my communication with my readers, and then accept their comments. Then I read another blogger, chastising fellow bloggers for not responding to the comments that are left. What’s the best protocol?

I think this is a fabulous question and one we all deal with on a daily basis. I will share my thoughts later this week – but today, I’d like to hear your thoughts! The official questions are below – but please, feel free to share any thoughts that are relevant to this topic!

Questions:

1. How do you handle responding to reader comments on your blog?

2. What method do you use to respond – the original blog post, the user’s blog, e-mail?

Have a fabulous weekend, dear friends, and be sure to enter The Gift Basket Design Book Giveaway – now thru April 16th!

I guess I should comment on this post! I'm trying to do better at that. My preferred method of replying to comments is on the commenter's blog. And it always makes me feel great when that is reciprocated. I don't think it's necessary, though, to go back and forth with the "thanks for commenting" comments. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's opinions.

Really interesting read… I do try to go back to peeps' blogs to comment, and sometimes feel that it is sad if you follow someone, or regularly comment and they never answer!!! But I don't comment on my own blog stream as I find I never go back to see if a question was answered, so no-one would come back to look at mine there… even if it seems out of place, I will say what I need as well as making a comment on their work… I am a member of the Inspirational Blog DT so that is a great excuse to wander about and snoop at will!!!!

I never reply in my comments. I usually try to email them personally. I am way behind right now though. Thanks, by the way for emailing me all of that info! I don't think I got back to you again the last time? Anyway!! Thanks so much!!!

I am so glad you started this weekly discussion.
It is interesting and helpful to hear the different points of view.

For me it all depends upon the comment. I may add something, a reply, on the blog right after their comment so others who may have the same question will see the answer. Then I only have to email the person who asked a question or expressed that particular opinion.
What I prefer to do is visit the commenter's blog and comment on their posts. If appropriate I can reference back and answer their comment.
    Does that make sense?
For some of my best bloggy friends that I know answer comments on the blog I may return later to see what the responses are but there is no way I could go back to every blog more than once.

I try to get to their blog and make a nice comment on their blog as well, but if I can't, I try to at least reply via email. I appreciate comments and want others to know that, too!

Great topic 🙂 Glad I came by from FTLOB!

I guess I'd say I have different expectation for a blogger with 100 follower and a blogger with 4,000 followers. Mostly I would go back check the comments to see if a blogger had answered there. I don't ever expect an email reply.

I always try to comment back however I do not have the biggest blog out there.

I am learning things each and every day with blogging.

I think this is such a tricky subject. I *really* try to respond to most if not ALL comments I get. For me, comments are a big part of why I blog. I like the community and as a blog reader/commentor, one of the biggest turn offs for me is when bloggers don't respond. To anyone. EVER. I have blogs that I have read for years and commented on frequesntly enough to be known as one of the usual, often times first or only commentors and have never ever had that comment acknowledged. I know you'd think I'd stop reading or commenting but sometimes I don't. Is it expecting too much? If a blogger throws out a question and readers respond, do you think it's their duty to respond? I suppose not all bloggers keep track of comments, I know I didn't when I first started blogging but a few months (years!) into it you'd think they would start giving back a bit. I kind of hate the subject because I always feel whiney at the end…like why aren't you talking back to me…?

It looks like you are going to have alot of comments to respond to! I always try to respond to all comments. Even if it is just a simple thank you. But I know people don't always come back to look. I need to research a better way to get my comment back to them. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I try to respond to the ones that are asking a question or leaving a really interesting comment. I haven't figured out how to use my reply to just one person though, so it always adds my reply to the bottom of the list. 🙁

I definitely couldn't reply to everyone. It would take too long and then my replies to those special comments would seem less genuine, I think.
