Book Review – What’s Next?
Life, according to renowned Christian counselor H. Norman Wright, is a series of transitions. A transition is a bridge between two different stages of life – a period of movement between states of relative certainty. Stability – that out-of-grasp prize that many of us yearn for – is the exception, not the rule. Change is the norm.
Many of us fear change because we associate it with catastrophe, disaster and loss. However, change isn’t always negative. Change frequently is a harbinger of hope, bringing with it new challenges and new opportunities.
Frequently, transitions occur as we move through life and encounter situations we all face at some point. To help us plan and prepare for these changes, H. Norman Wright has written a new book called What’s Next? Navigating Transitions To Make The Rest Of Your Life Count.
What’s Next? is written for people who want to make the most of the second half of their lives. In this book, Wright identifies the types of challenges we are likely to face during midlife and beyond and provides guidance to those in the midst of uncertainty and upheaval. Many of the topics in this book are universal in nature, such as Midlife Matters, The Gathering of Losses, and Your Purpose Now. A few chapters address specific issues that special groups face, such as the Baby Boomers, the Boomerang Generation, and the Empty Nesters.
Throughout his book, Wright offers practical advice on how to navigate the second half of life successfully. He encourages us to develop qualities and character traits that will strengthen our decision-making abilities and enable us to make good decisions. He helps us to keep our focus on God, reminding us that God is always in the midst of our circumstances and has a larger purpose for our lives than what is immediately evident. He also reminds us that we will one day leave a legacy behind and that legacy is often about intangible things.
To help us dig deeper, Wright sprinkles questions and exercises throughout the book and adds a study guide at the end to facilitate discussion.
If you’re looking for great practical advice from a trusted source to help you plan the rest of your life – put What’s Next? on your reading list.

Sounds like a good book. Life is full of changes. That’s for sure. I think most people resist change. I think Facebook is a good example of that. Every time they make changes people start complaining and protesting and wanting their old Facebook back. But, change is inevitable, and you’re right. Change can many times be a good thing. Some day there will be a really big change when Jesus returns and it will definitely be a change for the better.
Blessings,
Charlotte
