When it comes to books on sharing and living out your faith in the real world, I tend to approach them with caution. I’ve read too many books by authors who mean well but are out of touch with the realities of the day. So, I was quite surprised to find myself drawn to Bold As Love – What Can Happen When We See People The Way God Does by Bob Roberts, Jr. And, I’m equally surprised to share that in spite of my initial hesitancy, I genuinely enjoyed this book.
Bold As Love is a book about fostering multifaith relationships among people from diverse religious backgrounds – not for the purpose of proselytizing one another, but for the purpose of getting to know one another as neighbors and friends.
The author distinguishes multifaith gatherings from interfaith gatherings where people look for the lowest common denominator that holds them together and ignores other differences for the sake of getting along.
In multifaith gatherings, people learn how to openly and honestly share their differences and grow to respect and build relationships and friendships with each other in spite of their differences. In the process, as people build trust and friendship with one another, they will within the context of those relationships begin to learn about each other and their beliefs firsthand, overcoming fears and breaking down prejudices and stereotypes.
The author of the book is the founding pastor of Northwood Church, a megachurch in Texas. Over the years, Bob has held and participated in multifaith gatherings all over the world. As a result, you’ll find lots of practical tips and interesting anecdotes in this book based on the author’s personal experience.
If you are committed to living out the Great Commandments – love the Lord, your God with all your heart, your soul, and your mind and love your neighbor as yourself – this book is for you.
