Ragged Hope – Book Review

Today I’d like to share a book full of stories that each of us needs to read. The book is called Ragged Hope – Surviving The Fallout Of Other People’s Choices by Cynthia Ruchti, and it offers compassion and hope to each of us who have had to face the aftermath of other people’s careless choices – or, perhaps, are living with the guilt of choices we’ve made that have unintentionally hurt people we’ve loved.

Who among us does this not describe?

The book contains 26 stories of people facing heartbreak due to the hand that life dealt them. For example:

  • Don and Lila have altered their lives to raise the grandchildren that their daughter abandoned.
  • Olivia and her family are living in the aftermath of her son’s suicide.
  • Nora and her neighbors lost their homes when they were burnt to the ground not by accident – but by arson.

The list goes on and on.

The situations are heartbreaking – but the stories are filled with hope. The book doesn’t minimize the pain that each person is feeling – but each story focuses on leading us to the One who can truly heal our hurts – in a gentle, sensitive way.

Here is one of my favorite excerpts from the book:

Tamara’s attitude shifted. Garth had claimed too much emotional territory. She’d take some of it back. She’d relied so heavily on his defining who she was. She’d crawled into the mold he’d poured. When he was gone, nothing about her life held its shape.

But it didn’t have to stay that way. Among the few remaining friends who told her what she wanted to hear was one who told her the truth – that she had choices of her own to make, choices that would drive the hurt deeper or that would reshape her life.

At the dinner table one night, she announced to the kids that they would no longer say grace before a meal.

They would give thanks and live grace. A minor adjustment with major repercussions.

There are questions to reflect upon, and a Bible verse to meditate upon, at the end of each story.

Cynthie Ruchti has written a beautiful book whose words many people will cherish in the midst of difficult times. I highly recommend Ragged Hope for both personal and group use.

Other people’s choices do effect us in different ways. If we can make the best of a bad situation, so much the better. God can and will use us if we are willing to submit to his leading. We did and you can too.
