Winter In Full Bloom – Book Review

Lily Winters is terrified of flying. She would rather be just about anyplace than aboard that death trap of a 747 that is about to fly her halfway across the world to the land down under.

But, after learning the devastating secret that her estranged mother, Iris, dropped like a bomb during their first meeting in ten years, how could Lily not gather up every ounce of courage she had and board that plane?

How could Lily not travel to Melbourne, Australia, to look for Camille – the sister she didn’t know existed until her recent encounter with Iris?

How could Lily not search for the identical twin sister her mother so heartlessly gave away 38 years ago, when she was only one year old?

She couldn’t.

So, Lily Winters is terrified of flying – but there was no place else that she could be than aboard that death trap of a 747 that was about to fly her halfway across the world to the land down under.

Lily doesn’t know how she will find Camille. She doesn’t even know if it is possible. She certainly doesn’t have the funds to hire a private investigator. After all, she is still putting her daughter Julie through college.

She knows that searching for Camille will be like searching for a needle in a haystack. But, Lily knows she has to try. She knows she has to have faith in God. She knows she must believe in the impossible.

She doesn’t know much about Camille – only that she used to attend services at St. Paul’s Cathedral – so that is where she starts her search.

What Lily didn’t expect was to meet a stranger during her visit – Marcus – who seems particularly eager to make her acquaintance and lend his assistance to her search.

Can this impertinent stranger be trusted? What are his motives? Recent events from her past make trusting anyone – especially men – particularly difficult.

Winter In Full Bloom by Anita Higman is the powerful story of two highly dysfunctional families filled with individuals who are grappling to come to terms with the wounds they carry from their pasts – the hurts they have caused one another – and the futures they hope to forge together if they can move past their pain, forgive, and heal.

You’ll find plenty of unexpected twists and turns in this book that lead to an unforgettable climax.

Anita is a masterful storyteller. Winter In Full Bloom is filled with beautiful, literary prose and memorable characters that provoke deep reactions from us as we walk in their footsteps.

Winter In Full Bloom is also a redemptive story filled with God’s love and transformative insights. Anita skillfully weaves humor and light into the dark places within this book.

The following quotes provide a sample of Anita’s writing style as well as insight into the main characters in this book:

Lily: “You should get a job. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried it.”

Camille: “They say that sometimes the orphan babies in China are left to themselves with little care of any kind. They cry for help until they cannot cry anymore. The tears and weary pleas for comfort and foods are replaced by vacant stares. Their little spirits are broken – entirely. Those who’ve seen it say it’s eerie… unnatural… that kind of silence. I think of those sweet babies when I play my music. I guess I’m playing for them and for the lost little girl inside me who never got to grow up.”

Marcus: “Because of a grave error on our part, someone has died on our watch. It’s not anything you ever recover from. You go on with life, and you do the best you can, but you never truly mend.”

Winter In Full Bloom is one of those rare books that you don’t want to put down because the story keeps drawing you in – yet, you want to read it slowly to savor each carefully crafted passage.

I enjoyed every page of Winter In Full Bloom and highly recommend this beautifully written novel to you.
