Fun Facts About Cat Whiskers
Did you know that a cat’s whiskers do more than add to their beauty? That’s right – a cat’s whiskers are part of their built-in navigation system that help them to sense the subtlest changes in their environment!
Here are a few fun facts about cat whiskers you might enjoy:
- Cat whiskers are located in several places on a cat’s body, including the “whisker pad” of their cheeks, the corner of their mouths, the outer corner of their nose, their chin, their eyebrows – and even the back of their front legs!
- Cat whiskers are so sensitive, they can detect the slightest air movement and even odors! Cats use their whiskers to determine where items in their environment are located and to assess whether they can squeeze through openings. You should never cut a cat’s whiskers as this can cause them much disorientation and distress.
- Every cat’s whisker pattern is unique – just like human finger prints!
- You can often gauge a cat’s mood by watching his whiskers. An angry or defensive cat will pull his whiskers back. A happy, curious, or content cat will relax his whiskers and push them forward.
- Members of one cat breed – the Sphinx – have few if any whiskers!
- To “be the cat’s whiskers” is a British idiom that means “to be better than everyone else”.
Hope you enjoyed these facts – and hope you enjoyed today’s photo of our beautiful model, Mister Whiskers – better known as Legend to you!

Arriving to the party early this week, only just 9pm Tuesday here. Have an action packed day tomorrow getting organised before hubby heads out to sea and slightly concerned how I will manage without him with so much on. Not just for myself but my three girls.
Hoping you are well.

says:
I know I’m concerned when left to my own devices but you and your girls will be just fine!
Hope you are all well and on the mend!
I had no idea they expressed emotion through their whiskers! So cool! Now I am going to stare at my cat and see how she is feeling 🙂
Happy WW!

You too, dear Annie – I’m going to be looking for the leg whiskers on mine!
I love cat whiskers. I already knew that they used them to determine if they can squeeze through things, but I never really thought about how it would affect them if they were cut! Not that I’ve cut them, but I’ve come across cats that have appeared to have theirs cut. Poor cats!
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Oh, that’s terrible! Fortunately I’ve never seen a cat with their whiskers cut.
I wonder how they are affected when they naturally lose one of their whiskers though!

Nifty whisker facts! Any idea if cats shed whiskers like they do fur? I ask because sometime I find a lone whisker sitting in one of my girls favorite hang outs.
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Great question! 🙂
Yes, it is normal for cats to occasionally shed a whisker – and for that whisker to grow back (it usually takes a few months).
Finding a lone whisker is perfectly normal.
However, if your cat ever seems to be losing an abnormal number of whiskers – and they don’t seem to be growing back – you should take your cat to the vet in case there is a problem.

I knew some of these facts, but I didn’t know they had them all over their bodies. Interesting! Yeah, I learned the hard way when I was a little girl about cats’ whiskers. I cut our cat’s whiskers off and got in BIG trouble. Of course, they explained why and I was very upset that I caused our poor kitty distress. 🙁
You’re the cat’s whiskers for sharing such useful information each week. 🙂
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Oh no – your poor kitty!
I was at a cat show this weekend and I saw a kitten with jagged whiskers. Her owner said that the other kittens in the litter had been biting off her whiskers. All I could think about was this article I had just written and how terrible this poor kitten must be feeling!
I sure hope that kitten finds a good home – and soon!
Twitter: truebookaddict
says:
Oh no! The other siblings were bullying that poor kitty. 🙁 I wonder if it was the runt? How sad. I hope it finds a home soon too.
What fun facts. I never knew about these. I did hear not to cut a cat’s whiskers.
