Josephine Cain is a DC socialite living with her parents – General Cain and her mother – in Washington DC. They live a life of privilege. They are even at the Ford Theater on April 14, 1865 – the night when President Lincoln is shot.
When tragedy strikes close to home, however, General Cain decides to leave DC and to head West for a fresh start. He accepts a job overseeing the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. And – believing that the West is a little too Wild for a woman of his daughter’s stature – he decides to leave her behind.
But, the headstrong Josephine is determined to follow her father. Upon arriving, however, Josephine discovers that the Wild West is a far cry from the comfortable life she is used to. Torn between the civilized comforts of the East and the challenges of the West, and between two beaus, Josephine must grow up fast if she is to build a life for herself and to find love in the process.
Nancy Moser has written a well-researched book chronicling an important period in our nation’s history – the post Civil War era. She brings the clashing realities of our nation during that era to life as she takes us along on one woman’s journey from being a spoiled, manipulative young girl into a mature, compassionate woman.
The Journey Of Josephine Cain is a satisfying read and a fine addition to the American Tapestry Series.
