One Light Still Shines – Book Review

Over the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to share some incredible books at Create With Joy. I’ve shared books that have made us laugh and books that have made us cry. I’ve shared books that have taught us new skills and books that have taken us on amazing journeys. I’ve shared books that have stretched our imaginations and books that have introduced us to unforgettable characters.

With that said, if I could choose just one book to inspire you this season – just one book to make a difference in how you view everyone and everything in your life – One Light Still Shines by Marie Monville would be that book.

Marie Monville – the mother of three children – was married to Charlie Roberts, the man who shocked the world on October 2, 2006 by walking into an Amish schoolhouse, shooting 10 school girls, and then ending his life.

Seven years later, Marie tells her story in One Light Still Shines. Surprisingly, Marie does not focus on the details of the shooting but instead, shares one of the most powerful stories of love, forgiveness and redemption that you will ever read.

There are few situations one can imagine that are darker than the one that Marie lived through – yet Marie’s book is full of hope:

No matter how tragic your circumstances, your life is not a tragedy. It is a love story. And in your love story, when you think all the lights have gone out, one light still shines.

Marie is a woman of great faith, and so are her Amish neighbors whose lives were irrevocably changed by the massacre. Through their lives, One Light Still Shines shows that no matter how dark our lives may seem – God is greater than our biggest tragedies.

We so seldom see the present in light of the future. Thankfully, our Creator does. He is constantly creating us with the future in mind. I would never that day have dared to dream a dream as big as what God had in store for me yet that week. God is so much bigger than our dreams.

If you are in need of encouragement – if you are struggling with forgiveness – if you need to hang on to hope in the midst of an impossible situation – read One Light Still Shines.

This book could change your life.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

About Marie Monville

Marie Monville

Marie Monville, a life-time resident of the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area, often sat alongside her father in his milk truck as he served his Amish and non-Amish neighbors. She married her high school sweetheart, then gave birth to three children.

The first 28 years of her life were quiet, predictable, and full of regular day to day country living. That all changed the day her husband barricaded the Amish schoolhouse at Nickel Mines, just one mile down the road, and murdered one Amish schoolgirl after another, before committing suicide – a horrific scene that stunned the entire world. That day was October 2, 2006.

Though she knew that day that the life she’d known had just been shattered, that very same day God infused Marie with an unearthly assurance that he was with her, present and trustworthy, and that he would not fail her.

Today, Marie is remarried to Dan Monville, and their blended family is a testament to the healing kindness of God. Marie currently speaks nationwide as she and Dan continue to raise their five children in the Lancaster, PA area.
