Smart-Fab Review & Giveaway

Magellan Loves Smart-Fab

Smart-Fab Review

Are you ready to learn about a hot new product that is being used across the country by everyone from crafters and hobbyists, teachers and students, homeschooling families, and ministry and activity leaders to create amazing art projects and activities that are limited only by one’s imagination?

Today I’d like to introduce you to Smart-Fab – a unique, non-woven fabric that is unlike any other material on the market!

Smart-Fab Swatch Book

Smart-Fab is considered the smart alternative to paper and cloth for several reasons:

  • Smart-Fab is strong and flexible, yet soft yet durable.
  • Smart-Fab is easy to cut, fold, twist, crimp, ruffle and glue.
  • Smart-Fab won’t rip, fray, or wear out.
  • Smart-Fab is water and wear resistant.
  • Smart-Fab can easily be colored with paints, crayons, markers and all popular art media!
  • Smart-Fab comes in a variety of bold and brilliant colors.

Hope Card with Smart-Fab

The folks at Smart-Fab sent me a Sample Pack of Smart-Fab products containing three sample rolls of the product – a color swatch-book – and a few brochures to familiarize myself with the product. Since I couldn’t wait to share Smart-Fab with you, I thought I’d put it to the test by making a card – one of my frequent crafting outlets!

Smart-Fab In Punch

For my first test of the product, I decided to use a paper punch to cut a pretty flower for the card. The paper punch did a splendid job of cutting a thick piece of cardstock – but, unfortunately, the Smart-Fab got stuck in the punch and did not cut all the way through it.

However – once the Smart-Fab was rescued from the punch – I used a pair of scissors to finish cutting the pattern out and it passed the scissors test with flying colors! Both the large and small scissors I tested the Smart-Fab with cut through the material beautifully without any of the fraying I often get when cutting through regular fabric.

Smart-Fab In Xyron

Next, I ran a few strips though my Xyron machine which is currently filled with a repositionable adhesive. The Smart-Fab worked beautifully with this – there are actually two strips glued to the bottom of the card!

This is just a small sample of what you can do with Smart-Fab. For more ideas on how to use Smart-Fab:

It really is – I was thinking it is a nice alternative to both fabric and mulberry paper, and I was really regretting that I sold all of my decorative edge scissors earlier this year (due to space constraints) because I wanted to use them with the Smart-Fab!

(The material is too tough to tear which is why I ended up using the scraps at the bottom of the card to mirror the torn paper edges).

What the Smart-Fab left me wishing, however, was that I could sew – I saw some ADORABLE children’s costumes made from Smart-Fab and my imagination – if not my talents – soared in that direction!

  2. Ruh says:

Very interesting type of non-fabric fabric… do you think it would punch if paper was used on each side of it… I would like to play with this!!! Smiles, Ruth

      says:

Ruth that’s a great idea – I bet that would work as the Smart-Fab is thin enough to fit between two sheets and the video shows that it worked with their punches!

I will try this the next time I craft and when I do I will share the results! 🙂

Hi Kymi – so good to see you here!

I was thinking this would be great in a Cricut and I would have tested it in one but I don’t have anything like that (don’t laugh at me guys but I never made it past a Coluzzle – how sad is that!)

If any of you die cut manufacturers are reading this and would like some great publicity for your product – feel free to get in touch! 🙂

I feel like I’m ‘in on’ this from the beginning. I missed the whole Washi Tape introduction and all of a sudden it seemed like everyone was using and talking about it and I had no idea what the stuff was! (I know, shocking isn’t it!?!?!?!?) Finding out about Smart-Fab early makes me feel more craft-literate! :O)

    • Create With Joy
      Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
      says:

Well you know, LuAnn, I think Washi Tape was actually around before the name… because I had some of the stuff years before I actually heard it called by that name! (I just thought it was pretty decorative tape until I saw posts about Washi and did a search to find out what it was!) So, don’t feel bad – a lot of stuff out there goes by different names and you know what it is, just not by all of its labels!)

Smart-Fab, though, is both a company and a product name, so welcome to the ground floor! I don’t know how long they’ve been around, but I know they are trying to get the word out, so I’m excited to be a part of it!

  9. Carol Samsel says:

Looks like some stuff to play with…. do you know what it is made of ?

      Great question Carol!

According to their website, Smart-Fab is a disposable fabric substitute, which receives the characteristics of regular woven cloth
during their unique non-woven fabric manufacturing process.

You can learn more about the product on their FAQ page at http://www.smartfab.com/FAQ.

  12. twila says:

I really like how durable it is.

  13. Dorothy Teel says:

I like that it is not paper or fabric and that you can cut it with scissors or dye punch and that I could be used in a variety of applications from picture frame backing, to cards to special projects for the holiday

  14. Donna K says:

The colors are pretty and it sounds interesting.

  22. Rachel Cartucci says:

I love how strong this material is. I would make shapes and things for my son!

  23. Michele K says:

I think this would make a cool bookmark! I’d print on one of my inspirational poems and give them out for friendship parties, birthdays, any occasion, actually! Being no-rip, I wouldn’t have to laminate. Next, I’d use it instead of paper to make my framed poetry. I’d love to win and try it!

  24. Jerry says:

I would make costumes for our local drama team

  25. Christina D says:

This fabric looks great. Loved their video and wouldn’t mind having a bit of it.

  26. Merry says:

I would probably use it to decorate picture frames and make cards and maybe let the kids make some type of necklace or racelet with them.
