Is Your Pet Overweight?

Do you ever look at your precious pets and wonder if they are packing on too many pounds? If so, you’re not alone! At times I wonder if, beneath all the fur, my cats are large because of their breed and build – or because they are living out life a little too largely!

Tsunami at Create With Joy

I especially worry about cats with couch potato tendencies like Tsunami. He’s a bona fide member of the clean plate club who refuses to join a local gym! As much as I try to motivate Tsunami to move away from the table, our play sessions often resemble the ones in the One Big Kitty video:

Turns out I have good reason to be vigilant about my cats’ weights. According to one veterinary survey, 54% of the nation’s pets are overweight, and their owners don’t even realize it!

The largest veterinary practice in the world recently produced a report containing extensive research about the state of our pets’ health. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital State Of Health 2012 Report, in the last five years, the number of overweight dogs has increased by 37% – and the number of overweight cats has increased by 90%! If that weren’t shocking enough, 76% of these dog owners and 69% of these cat owners believe their portly pets are healthy!

What should you do if you suspect your precious pet needs to lose a few pounds?

  • Take your pet to the veterinarian to determine if your pet’s weight is healthy.
  • If your pet is needs to lost weight, ask how Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution products can help your pet get rid of his or her paunch!

  3. I don’t think my kitty is too fat but this looks like a great plan for cats that are a bit bulgy. My cat is very furry so it’s hard to tell if he’s all girth or not.

Know what you mean Tony – with furry cats like ours you can’t rely on sight to tell if they are at their proper weights!
That’s why those vet appointments are SO important!

I pass on the giveaway, thank you, my cats are not overweight – and I’m not blinded by affection 😉
But my mother’s cat is, poor old dear !

I have a Maine Coon cat that our vet says is moderately overweight. He’s like a dog: If there is food around, he will eat it. All of it!

      Hi Carol,
Thanks for entering! I know I really have to watch my cats’ weights because they are like yours – they like to eat!
Best of luck – I hope this will help your cat to get into shape!

  6. Margot C says:

My cat Leonardo is about 3 years old. I would guess that he weighs about 20 pounds (ok maybe more!) though he is a really big cat; like his bones and his legs are big and he’s about the size of a dog. He’s just developing a sort of fat stomach.
