A Sensible Arrangement by Tracie Peterson

A Sensible Arrangement

A Sensible Arrangement – Book Review

Have you ever experienced something so terrible, that you just wanted to walk away from your life and leave the pain of your past behind?

Have you ever been so hurt by someone you loved, that you never wanted to open up your heart and put yourself through that experience again?

A Sensible Arrangement by Tracie Peterson is a Western romance that tells the story of two individuals who have vowed to do just that.

Marty Dandridge Olson is a Texan rancher who was widowed when her beloved husband was gored by a longhorn bull. Everywhere she looks, she is reminded of the life she once had – and everything she has lost. That’s why she decides to throw caution to the wind and leave her life behind by answering an advertisement for a “Lone Star bride”.

Of course, she doesn’t tell her family of her plans. What would they think if they knew she was heading to Denver to marry a man she dosen’t even know?

Jake Wythe is an up and coming banker who is being groomed by Paul Morgan – relative to J. P. Morgan – to hold a prominent position among the elite and influential in Denver society. But, with his position comes a price – including the requirement that a man of his standing must be married. So – he places an ad for a “Lone Star bride” since his roots – and his heart – remain in Texas. He isn’t looking for love – just a marriage of convenience.

And so – Marty and Jake begin their life together, looking for nothing more than a situation that will satisfy their own personal needs.

But – what will happen as the two get to know each other? What will happen as the national economy begins to collapse and their future looks more and more uncertain? What will happen when Marty learns that the dreams that Jake holds near and dear to her heart are in direct conflict with the plans that she dreams her future will take?

A Sensible Arrangement is the 100th book that author Tracie Peterson has written, and my first introduction to this prolific Christian author. If you have never read any of her books, this book – the first book in her Lone Star Brides series – is a fine place to start.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to her sequels in the series: A Moment In Time (slated for June 2014) and A Matter Of Heart (slated for October 2014).

There are several things that I liked about A Sensible Arrangement. First, I truly enjoyed Tracie’s portrayal of both of the main characters. Marty was such a strong female role model – I love how she handled herself throughout the book – and yet, she displayed very real spiritual struggles that a number of readers will relate to.

Jake was kind and compassionate – yet not immune to the pressures of being caught up between the world he was living in, and the world he aspired to return to.

I also enjoyed the plot. I was drawn in from the start, and the situations the characters found themselves involved in held my interest throughout the book. I also found the book a little more realistic than some. Not everyone was nice. Not every loose end was tied up as neatly as one might have hoped. But – to me, that was art emulating life. Things don’t always work out the way one would like.

Whether this is your 1st or 100th Tracie Peterson read – A Sensible Arrangement is sure to make a fan out of you!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
