The Queen’s Handmaid – Book Review
If you are a fan of historical fiction – if you love stories that take you back in time and bring the past to life – if you enjoy meeting characters you’ve read about in the Bible and in encyclopedias and seeing them interact with newly envisioned characters from the author’s imagination – than clear some space on your calendar. Once you start reading The Queen’s Handmaid by Tracy L. Higley, you are not going to want to put it down!
The Queen’s Handmaid is the sweeping saga of a young girl named Lydia, who was orphaned at birth and serves as the royal handmaid to Cleopatra – the formidable Queen Of Egypt. Cleopatra is a ruthless, power-hungry queen who will stop at nothing to advance herself or her cause. Life is not easy in the royal palace – but it’s the only life Lydia has ever known. Lydia dreams of the day when she will be free to pursue a life of her own.
But – a life of her own is not what Lydia’s future holds.
When Lydia finds herself outside of the Queen’s good graces – and when her dying mentor Samuel entrusts her with a secret and dangerous mission that has been passed down from generation to generation – Lydia finds herself on the run. Armed with secret scrolls passed down from the prophet Daniel, she must find and deliver them to a man within the temple courts in Jerusalem. With limited options for escape, she seeks refuge and passage with Herod – the governor who aspires to be King of Judea.
But – in a royal environment filled with unrest, constant scheming and political intrigue – in a world where spiritual darkness abounds – how will Lydia fulfill her duties, both to her charges and to her mentor who gave his life for a cause he so passionately believed in?
Tracy has done a masterful job of weaving lots of intricate details about a fascinating period of history into one deeply, satisfying book. Prepare to be drawn in and totally immersed by The Queen’s Handmaid!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This looks like a great book! I can’t wait to read read it. Recently I read another historical fiction book based on the story of Esther in the Bible. It was great too and it started me on this trend of reading historical fiction based on characters from biblical times.
Which book and author did you read? Sounds fabulous – I’ve also been enjoying this genre as of late!
Check out The Thief by Stephanie Landsem which was also recently reviewed on my blog.
Couldn’t put that one down either!
