The Chronological Study Bible, NIV – Book Review

When it comes to Bibles, we live in a time of biblical riches. For those of us who love to study God’s Word, there is truly a Bible for every person and every purpose we can imagine.

If you are looking for a Bible whose strength lies in its ability to help you understand the Bible in the historical and cultural context in which the books were written, then the newly released The Chronological Study Bible, NIV from Thomas Nelson should be high on your wish list!

The first thing that you will notice when you open this Bible is its visually stunning pages. Unlike most Bibles, which are printed on plain white paper, The Chronological Study Bible, NIV is printed on parchment-colored paper and filled with soothing but colorful photos, illustrations and graphics that highlight key markers on your journey through time.

Once you finish your visual tour through the Bible, you’ll want to read the Introduction to gain an understanding of how The Chronological Study Bible is structured. Because the title of this Bible contains the name “chronological”, you may be inclined to think that the events of the Bible are presented in the exact order that they occurred from start to finish – but that isn’t entirely true. According to the editors, establishing chronology is a lot more difficult than one might think because certain events are difficult to precisely pinpoint, while other events are simultaneously documented across several books.

To resolve this problem, The Chronological Study Bible is divided into 9 epochs (or periods of time) where books are placed based on historical events that occurred (or are predicted to occur) in world history.

Here are a few of the features you’ll find inside of The Chronological Study Bible, NIV:

  • Full-color illustrations of places, artifacts, and cultural phenomena
  • Contextual articles that connect Bible events, world history and culture
  • Notes on daily life
  • Time panels and charts that show the flow of Biblical history
  • In-text and full-color maps
  • Daily one and two year Bible reading plans
  • Concordance and glossary

The Chronological Study Bible, NIV makes a wonderful study resource for those wanting to learn more about the history, background and culture of the Bible, and for those looking for a unique devotional and study Bible. Because of its unique features and narrow niche, however, I would not recommend it as your primary study Bible.

One final note: There are several versions of the NIV translation available on the market today. The Chronological Study Bible, NIV, uses the gender-neutral NIV 2011 translation. The Chronological Study Bible is also available in the NKJV translation.

I rate this Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

  1. I really enjoy chronological Biblical resources and am so thankful to live in, as you say, a time of biblical riches. However, it is not that time yet for all the languages of the world so as you enjoy these riches, please pray for the 2,000+ remaining Bible-less peoples in the world today! Thanks for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday! Looking forward to seeing you again this week!

This is the first year I’ve used a chronological Bible and I’m really enjoying it. This one looks great with all it’s extras. It’s true we live in “Biblical Richness.” From where I sit I can see eight Bibles. I want to be faithful in reading them!
