Chicken Soup For The Soul – Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injuries – Book Review
When television journalist Bob Woodruff was named co-anchor of ABC’s World News after the untimely passing of Peter Jennings in 2005, he and his wife Lee probably felt like they were living the American dream.
Little did they know that a month later – on January 29, 2006, they would join “the club that no one wants to be a member of – the more than 2.5 million families every year, just in the United States, who receive the devastating news that their loved one has suffered from traumatic brain injury” (TBI).
In the Forward to Chicken Soup For The Soul – Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injuries – 101 Stories Of Hope, Healing, And Hard Work, Lee Woodruff introduces us to what it means to sustain, live with, recover from, and care for someone who has suffered from a traumatic brain injury – and prepares us to meet the 101 men and women who share their courageous stories in this book.
Did you know that traumatic brain injuries can happen to any one at any time?
Today, much of the news coverage related to traumatic brain injuries is linked to the tremendous number of head injuries soldiers are sustaining in Iraq and Afghanastan (Bob Woodruff was injured in the war zone while on news assignment).
However, many traumatic brain injuries are also sustained by civilians during the course of their daily lives through accidents, falls, and other ordinary events.
The authors of the 101 stories inside of Chicken Soup For The Soul – Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injuries tackle these topics:
- But You Look So Normal
- Self Discovery
- Never Giving Up
- Healing Power Of Mother Nature
- Acceptance
- A Family Affair
- Attitude Is Everything
- Coping Strategies That Work
- Opportunity Knocks
- Making A Difference
As you can see, Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injuries isn’t just for families and individuals who are dealing with this specific issue. The stories you’ll read – many of which are written by TBI surviviors themselves – speak to the resilience of the human spirit.
Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injuries is a book that deserves your time and attention, regardless of whether you or anyone you know currently is living with TBI.

I have had no experience with TBI but I read Bob and Lee’s book the moment it came out and was fascinated in knowing more about a brain injury. I am in awe of people that work so hard for the patient and and am in awe of the patient’s themselves.

Thanks for entering this giveaway Melanie! You will learn so much from reading this book. This has truly been one of my favorite books in the series so far!
My husband is now recovering from a traumatic brain injury due to having kidney cancer. His brain suffered lesions, which we knew nothing about, until a couple of them bled out and caused him to fall. Now we are struggling with the diagnosis of stage 4 kidney cancer, and infected lungs and brain. Sounds like something I desperately need to read!

Hi Terri,
I am so sorry to hear about your husband – what a challenging time this must be for you and your family. Thank you for sharing your experience – I did not know that this was a possible source of traumatic brain injury before reading your comment. I pray for daily miracles for your family – and I wish you all of the best in this giveaway!
I have read a couple “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books and enjoyed them very much. I have no current experience with TBI but really am interested in the brain and people overcoming obstacles.

Even the stroke my husband experienced left him with problems and in his brain is where he was affected, with small broken vessels. Fortunately he was able to recover quit well.
Then I had a gal working for me, her husband was in a car accident, his head was thorn into the back window of his small truck, he was in a coma for months and when he woke, he did not know her and had reverted back to a little boy. Brain injury is very difficult to deal with. Im sure this book will mean a lot for someone.
I am still enjoying my Home Sweet Home book I won, thank you again,
Have a great day Sunday!!

Wow, Karren, I’m so glad your husband was able to recover from his stroke. My aunt suffered from several strokes when she was still alive so I know how they can affect the brain.
So glad you are enjoying your Chicken Sop For The Soul Book. Enjoy your week!
I keep thinking of a dear beloved friend who was in a car accident years ago, and still suffers greatly from her TBI. I would give her this book as a gift.
Although I’ve not been affected by TBI directly some of my favorite athletes have. I’d be interested to know more about the challenges they have faced during their recoveries. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
We have a family friend who suffered a TBI after a motorcycle accident. It’s been inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time watching him struggle to recover
TBI patients always impress me. They work hard for a long time trying to regain what they’ve lost. Their family members learn to be very patient. I can imagine this book would make one laugh and cry.
I don`t have a brain injury, but have taught students who have. I would love to share this with a good friend of mine, who is the mom of a former student of mine with a brain injury.

Best of luck to you in this very special giveaway! 🙂
I’d love to read and learn more about TBI’s, and what has been said in this book by others recovering from TBI. My sister managed to have a couple head injuries herself.

TBI is such a scary thing!
I have been fortunate not to ever have had a serious head injury but I have had a few knocks that have left me dazed and I cannot imagine going through that experience!
Best of luck in the giveaway!
Thank you! My sister’s was pretty serious.
Our oldest daughter was in a bad car accident a year ago and suffered a TBI , subdural hematoma on the left side of her brain. She is now married and living in North Carolina. Our family was very traumatized by this event, I would love a copy of this book!
