Stolen – Book Review

Sometimes I come across a book that I know will be a difficult read for me personally, but agree to review because the information contained in the book may prove beneficial to someone reading my blog.

That’s how I felt when Stolen – The True Story Of A Sex Trafficking Survivor by Katarina Rosenblatt, PhD with Cecil Murphy came across my desk. I don’t need to go into a lot of description – the title really says it all.

Stolen provides a first hand account of a young girl who is easily lured into a heartbreaking situation because she is not surrounded by a loving and protective family the way she should have been.

Of course, that’s not to say that children from loving and protective homes aren’t stolen from their families and recruited into this insidious industry. That’s just to say that the odds increase when certain factors come into play.

An important thing you’ll learn in this book is that sex trafficking is not something that is limited to big cities or far away lands – it is something that is happening in every community across the country. The authors also stress that trafficking happens to boys as well as girls. They talk about how children are spotted, groomed and recruited – important information you need to help keep your children safe.

Most importantly, the authors share that although it is unlikely, escape and recovery are possible. Katariina founded a ministry dedicated to locating, rescuing and redeeming other victims of human trafficking. Included in Stolen are the stories of some of the survivors who have been impacted by their ministry.

Since this book was released by a Christian publisher, Stolen isn’t as graphic as it may have been under different circumstances. Still, the book is sure to raise a lot of emotions as you read it. Be particularly careful if you are an abuse survivor as you might find reading this book triggering.

If you are a parent, an educator, a pastor or ministry leader, or someone who works with children, Stolen contains important information that can help you protect and safeguard your children – and help you learn how to help those who are impacted by this terrible industry.

Way back in the early nineties, My daughter and her friend were approached at the mall. We were in the city for the day and I had dropped them off for a few hours. They were of course the typical teen of that time, big hair, shocking makeup, ripped jeans, young beautiful soon to be women. They came to me right away, but the recruiters were long gone. The guise they criminals used was to ‘be a movie star’ The city was for most purposes a very small one. My girls were small town girls, so innocent. This is like a cancer in our society. The girls that are recruited are so easily trapped. {the predators who recruit, sell, and buy them need to be held and punished to the maximum of the law} This is a book worth reading!! Thank you for the review.

    • Thank you for sharing your story. It’s so important for young girls to learn that people are not always what they seem.
It’s so good that your daughters were able to come to you with their story.
I’m glad they are safe and that you enjoyed the review.
