Double Whammy, Double Dip & Double Strike – A Davis Way Crime Caper Book Series Review
If you are looking for a cozy mystery series with a cast of characters that’s more zany and entertaining than the cast of a reality TV show – then get ready to escape into the wacky world that Gretchen Archer has created in Double Whammy, Double Dip and Double Strike!
This trio of books follows the mis-adventures of Davis Way – the down-on-her-luck former female cop who we first meet in Double Whammy.
As the story opens, we learn that Davis has been unemployed for the past year and has applied to every available position in L.A. (that’s Lower Alabama to the initiated) – and to the same job in Biloxi, Mississippi fifty times!
As luck would have it, Davis’s luck is about to change and our desperately unemployed protagonist soon strikes gold when she lands herself an undercover position as the newest member of an elite security team at the spectacular Bellissimo Resort and Casino.
Little does Davis know that her dream job is about to turn into a nightmare – and that Double Whammy describes more than the rigged game she’s been hired to decipher.
Double Whammy is laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed getting to know Davis Way in Book 1 of the Davis Way Crime Caper Series – and I couldn’t wait to see where her undercover adventures would take her in Book 2, Double Dip and Book 3, Double Strike!
In Double Dip, Davis is now working under the direct supervision of former nemesis No Hair, and she has a new directive: find out who’s double-dipping into their profits by working the slot tournaments. Of course, in Davis’s world, no job is as easy as it sounds, and she is soon over her head once more dealing with those pesky people from her past like her no-good ex-husband that she just can’t shake – those thorns in her side like Bianca Sanders that she’s forced to emulate – and her landlord-turned-lawyer-turned lover Bradley Cole.
In Double Strike, Davis finds that securing the most anticipated event in Bellisimo history – the Strike it Rich Sweepstakes – isn’t as easy as it sounds – especially when you’re contending with new bosses, an out-of-control love life, and a host of other problems.
Gretchen Archer’s writing style is slick and fast-paced throughout the series. She’ll truly have you scratching your head as you try to keep up with all of the action and she’ll keep you guessing as to what’s really going on until the very end of each book.
The plots are fun – the characters are memorable – and the dialog is flavorful, with just enough sass and double entendres sprinkled throughout to give it a PG rating,
Double Whammy, Double Dip, and Double Strike are the perfect books to read when you need an escape from reality or when you just need to laugh out loud! You can read each story individually, but I’d recommend starting at the beginning if possible so you don’t miss out on a moment of the fun!
I rate the series 4 out of 5 stars.
