Why Easter? and Why Christmas? by Barbara Reaoch – Two Children’s Book Reviews
On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
On Christmas day, we celebrate the miraculous birth of Jesus and the reason He came into the world.
In a culture where the commercialization of these holidays has flourished, does your child understand the real meaning behind these celebrations?
Equally as important, do you feel equipped to teach your children why the birth and resurrection of Jesus are more significant than the arrival of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny?
If not, Bible Study Fellowship International’s Director of Children’s Programs, Barbara Reaoch, is here to help!
In her books, Why Easter? and Why Christmas?, Barbara arms you with everything you need to tackle this important educational task!
Why Easter? and Why Christmas? are both 72-page, 9 x 9 illustrated devotionals from Shepherd Press that provide families with a meaningful and Scriptural way to communicate the meaning of Easter and Christmas to their children.
Although these books can be read anytime during the year, they are designed to be used during the 4-week period leading up to each holiday.
Each book contains 28 beautifully illustrated lessons that are divided into several parts:
- Bible Reading
- Devotion
- Truth
- Discussion Questions
- Memory Verse
- Hymn or Christmas Song (lyrics provided in the back of book)
- Discussion Topic
Because of the interactive nature of the books, they work particularly well as family devotionals. You can use the books each year as part of your family’s holiday tradition and watch how your child’s knowledge and faith grows each year!
Why Easter? and Why Christmas? make a wonderful addition to your family’s library and should hold particular interest to homeschooling parents!
I rate these books 5 out of 5 stars.

Those sound like great books! The true meaning behind these holidays is so easily forgotten with all of the commercialization. Teaching kids about the “reason for the season” is so important!
Thanks so much for linking up on the Kid Lit Blog Hop! These look like wonderful resources for both Easter and Christmas.
Sounds like a really detailed resource! Thanks for sharing with the Kid Lit Blog Hop!
I remembre when I was a child for a long time I didn’t fully understand the meaning of Easter. I was enjoying the traditions in my family but I didn’t quite know the background of these traditions. This is an important tool for parents to bring more light to their child though a book that is written in a child-friendly language. Thank you for introducing this book, saving and sharing for later!

Dear Maria,
Thank you SO much for sharing your experience with us! I think that often, once we understand something, we assume that others do as well.
What is particularly nice about these books is that they build upon your child’s understanding each day and offer plenty of opportunities for dialog and discussion – as well as worship – so that children not only have a chance to gain an intellectual understanding of what Easter means – but an experiential one as well!
Have a blessed Easter weekend!
