Chat In The Comments: When Do You Find Time To Read?

No Matter How Busy Quote

Welcome to our 7th gathering of The Book Nook at Create With Joy! I’m thrilled to welcome those of you who are just discovering our community as well as those who have been with us from the start!

This week’s question comes from my husband, who would like to know:

In the midst of your busy schedules,
When do you find the time to read?

I thought this was a topic we’d all love to discuss and read about, so I invite you to share your answers in the comments – or to write a Book Nook blog post and share the link!

For me, reading comes both in dedicated and in stolen moments. Reading is an integral part of my life, so I make the time to read (although, at times, it can be challenging!) Sometimes I set aside chunks of time to read by joining events like a Read-A-Thon. Sometimes I set aside time to read during the day (it’s a wonderful alternative to watching TV, for example!)

And, I always make sure I have reading material on hand for “stolen moments” – time that would otherwise be lost, down time – time waiting in line… time waiting for someone to show for an appointment… little moments that, when spent well, can surprisingly add up into pages a day!

Not it’s your turn! In the midst of your busy schedule, when do you find the time to read? Share your answers in the comments – we look forward to reading your responses!

Reading to me is like breathing, so there is always time. When I had four young ones and was busy, busy I listen to books in the car. I remember reading while I was nursing my firstborn. We homeschooled, so our family had a dedicated reading time daily for individual reading since the children were very small. They looked at picture books when they were too young to read. My favorite kind of reading was with each child when they were young.

Great share Donna – and what a wonderful quote “Reading to me is like breathing, so there is always time!”
I love that you incorporated dedicated individual reading time into your family schedule from the very beginning.
That’s also a great tip about audiobooks – when I used to have hour-long commutes one way, I used to listen to them too!

“being intentional in choices of using time available” – YES!

Thanks for sharing these great tips with us on how to squeeze reading into the busiest of schedules.
I also love the tip to make notes to keep those review requests in order!

Hope you also get lots of great reading in during the next few weeks as well! 🙂

I really enjoy reading in the early morning hours and again upon resting before bed.

  4. Another great quote that is so true: “Self chosen ignorance”. We don’t have to be ignorant we have a wealth of knowledge at our finger tips. Just read! 🙂
Thank you for hosting this link up.

I have only one child (22 mo old) but she is taking all of my time and energy. I had to adjust my reading to hers. Late at nights I read some mysteries and crime literature (I am too tired by then to read much) but mostly, I read what she reads.

I figured out that instead of fighting against the current, to go with it. She needs picture books with words, animals and such? I get animal encyclopedias. She learns, I learn.
She needs sleep-time stories? I enrich my children literature reads. She needs fairy tale stories? Good; so do I.
Every day I incorporate some science excerpts from books. She sees words, numbers and shapes and I enjoy the whole thing.
Hopefully I will have time to go back to fully reading adult literature in a few years.

That can be a challenge time period to find quiet time for yourself – but what a wonderful time to infuse the love of reading into the next generation!

Fortunately there are so many wonderful children’s books out there waiting to be discovered and re-discovered!

The Graham Blanchard giveaway I’m hosting is perfect for your child – a 3 board book gift set for children ages 0 through 7 – so be sure to check that one out!

And, as for you – not to be indelicate, but you can always leave a thriller in the throne room…

      Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Quirky Grandma says:

I babysit in the morning and work on my writing at night usually after everyone goes to sleep. Afternoons are me time — unless I have an appointment or shopping to do. I either read or nap. Usually, read. Meaning about twice a week I read. Also, I keep a book handy for appointment waiting and such.

  7. Annie Kate says:

I read while waiting at appointments, in the evenings if I’m not busy, and on Sundays. Reading is very important to me, so I make time for it.

It gives me wholesome, helpful things to occupy my mind, and many ideas for living, parenting, homeschooling, and outreach. Even though I usually read nonfiction these days, good fiction stays in my head for years.

Glad to meet another non-fiction reader – I love fiction but lean towards a lot of non-fiction which seems to be in the minority on most blogs…

I agree, you have to make time to read if it’s important to you. It’s truly one of the ways you keep growing and expanding your horizons!

  8. How fun! I just found your site and will have to take a look around. I have lately gotten into listening to audiobooks during my commutes. I’ve been able to enjoy a lot of good literature that way!

  9. Mariana says:

To me, reading is essential. Not only because I’m a writer, also because it gives me balance. I love sharing my favorite authors with my children: reading Alice in Wonderland with my youngest son, or Oscar Wilde’s short tales with my three kids. Those are moments that we cherish together.

Thank you for hosting. Apart from sharing posts, it is great to get to know about the world of books.

  13. I love books 🙂 …now that we have kids I have less time to read, but generally I can fit in some reading during naptime or while waiting for baby to fall asleep. Otherwise I’m relegated to reading kids’ books aloud 😉

Thank you SO much for adding Spring into Horror to your Book Nook this week! You are truly awesome. Are you joining us? Are you doing Dewey’s on Saturday?

I’m planning on joining you again for Book Nook. I just get so busy. But I’ve started my weekly Reading Life posts again so would it be okay to add that post to the link up?

When do I find time to read. Well.. that’s tricky because I have so little time these days. I always make sure I have a book with me wherever I go so I can snatch little snippets of reading time here and there. And I try to read during commercials when I’m watching TV. Late nights seem to be the best time to read for me. Lucky I’m a night owl. 🙂

      Hi Michelle,

It’s my pleasure to share your seasonal reading challenges at The Book Nook! I am planning to participate in both events as time permits (schedule has been jammed as of late!)

You are totally welcome to share your Reading Life posts at The Book Nook!

Glad you can find time to read even if it’s little snippets here and there. At least that gives you time to process what’s happening in the lives of the characters you are reading about!

Look forward to seeing you at this week’s event! 🙂
