Nalah Goes To Mad Mouse City – Book Review
Have you ever felt angry, disappointed or bored because all of your friends are doing exciting things while you are left behind?
That’s the predicament that Nalah – the little girl with the wild imagination who we first met in Nalah and the Pink Tiger – faces in her latest book, Nalah Goes To Mad House City by author and illustrator Anne Sawyer-Aitch!!
Of course, when your imagination is as wild as Nalah’s – you never stay bored for very long!
In Nalah Goes To Mad House City, what starts out as a bad day for Nalah turns into a fantastical adventure when Nalah goes on a magical journey to the home of her friend Mad Tooth The Mouse – the friend who likes to eat her socks!
There, she discovers she is a hero in Mad House City and she enjoys many wonderful celebrations in her honor!
Of course, Nalah’s adventures are only beginning…
Nalah Goes To Mad Mouse City is a wonderfully imaginative story that stands out not only for the unique story that Anne Sawyer-Aitch weaves, but also for the one-of-a-kind illustrations that Anne creates through a process caked “illuminated illustration” that involves cut-away designs, layering and back-lighting.
Anne says that the Nalah stories were inspired by a real-life girl – her lively, rambunctious niece – as well as the epic games she shared with her brothers as a child.
If you are looking for a children’s author who infuses imaginative story-telling, creative play and cultural diversity into her books, be sure to check out Anne Sawyer–Aitch and her latest book, Nalah Goes To Mad Mouse City!

About Anne Sawyer-Aitch
Anne Sawyer-Aitch (pronounced like the letter “H”) is a puppeteer and stilt-walker. When she decided to create her first book, Nalah and the Pink Tiger, she began experimenting with different styles of illustration, and finally discovered a technique that uses her skills as a maker of color shadow puppets. She calls it “Illuminated Illustration”, and it involves cut-away designs, layering, and backlighting.
In her capacity as a puppeteer, Anne creates puppet pieces of all kinds: parade floats, giant stilt puppets, and intricate color shadow shows. She is a MN State Arts Board Roster Artist, teaching puppetry all over the state, and has been touring around with her first book & her Nalah and the Pink Tiger show for the last two years. Nalah Goes To Mad Mouse City is her second book.
Anne lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
