The Message 100 – Book Review
Have you ever wanted to completely immerse yourself in the Bible and surround yourself with the wondrous story of God’s love and His intimate involvement in our lives?
Do you want to be swept away by the breathtaking details of how God sent His only Son into this world to live among us and to die on a cross so that we might have eternal life?
Do you want to hold your breath as you read with anticipation about future things to come?
If you’d like to experience the Bible in an way that’s completely different than anything you’ve ever experienced it before, then The Message 100 – The Story Of God In Sequence by Eugene M. Peterson might interest you!
The Message 100 contains Eugene M. Peterson’s translation of the Bible – a contemporary paraphrase that uses the idiomatic phrases of our day to convey the conversational feel of the original languages.
Bible Gateway describes The Message translation this way:
The goal of The Message is to engage people in the reading process and help them understand what they read. This is not a study Bible, but rather “a reading Bible.” – Bible Gateway, About The Message
What’s unique about this book is that it’s not arranged in the format of a traditional Bible, but is organized into 100 sequential readings designed to keep the timeline of the Bible intact.
This unusual combination of translation and sequential arrangement allows you to set aside your pre-conceived notions of what the Bible is about and to truly immerse yourself in God’s story in a fresh new way – one of The Message 100’s strengths.
However, experienced Bible readers will find that the sequential arrangement makes it challenging to find specific books and passages (even with the references located in the back of the book) – which creates a usability issue.
If you’ve ever tried to read the Bible cover to cover, but never made it out of the Old Testament – or you’ve tried to read the Bible but have gotten stuck on all of the big fancy words – then The Message 100 might be just what you need to accompany you on your next Biblical journey!
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
