Wordless Wednesday – The Counter Cat

Counter Cat - Create With Joy

Welcome To Wordless Wednesday At Create With Joy!

The Counter Cat

Every household has its rules. Pet parents are pretty good about communicating those rules to their prodigy the moment they bring them into their homes – and most cats and dogs are pretty good at picking up the rules of your home – even when they choose not to comply.

One of the rules in our home is that the cats are not supposed to hang out on the kitchen counter tops. There are several reasons but our main concern is their safety. We do not want them to jump up on the counter and be injured by something sharp, hot or otherwise hazardous.

Most of our cats have been very good in complying with this rule but –as you might expect – there is always one renegade in the bunch.

Magellan the Counter Top Kitty

Magellan – our renegade – loves to explore our home to look for novel places to hang and lately, he has found a cozy-to-him place on the forbidden but irresistible counter top to rest – right next to the makes-my-heart-palpitate stove! He knows full well that he is not supposed to be there – a fact that only makes the spot more appealing to him.

Sometimes his eyes will sparkle with amusement as he watches me from his perch and waits to see how long it takes for me to find him in the forbidden zone. Sometimes he defies me to come within pawing distance, then nonchalantly jumps up on the refrigerator or down on the floor as if nothing unusual is happening if he sees me sauntering in his direction.

And sometimes – like today – he uses the ploy that he is SO tuckered that no one could possibly disturb such an obviously exhausted cat – as long as his eyes remain closed and he appears to be sleeping (even though his kitty ears are perked and he is listening to every sound)!

The Counter Cat is a gambler. As long as his Dad does not discover his transgression – he is willing to bet that he is safe!

Those forbidden spots are the most desirable places to be for cats, children and adults alike. We hope you enjoyed your nap Magellan.

Aww… while I am sure my two cats would love to do this, we try not to let them sit where we prepare food, but Magellan sure looks comfy! Thanks for hosting.

    Cute kittie.

Your renegade is a fancy fellow. Just gorgeous. My guest cat never tried the kitchen or breakfast counter. He was figuring out the mantle which is full of speakers, Internet boxes, and photos but one “no” stopped him. It’s amazing how they can listen better than dogs sometimes.

  13. What a gorgeous kitty 🙂

  14. meowmeowmans says:

Magellan, you rebel, you! Funny, but he’s not just hanging out on the counter. He’s also hanging off of the counter. 🙂

Thanks for hosting, Ramona. Have a great day.

Aww! They have so many cartoons and jokes about cats lately on FB It’s unreal. They’re all so cute. Hey, maybe you out to get Megellan a job! bwahahahaha LOL

  16. That’s a beautiful picture, Megallan, but you have to watch out that you don’t fall off 😀 Counter kitties are very cute, but unfortunately I can’t jump so high anymore…I wasn’t allowed on the counter anyway, but sometimes I just tried, when I was younger, and Granny loved it. She even made pictures of it 🙂 Pawkisses for a very lovely day and thanks for hosting 🙂 <3

  17. Magellan looks like he is one that rules the roost. It looks similar to a pet calf we had once who would walk up four steps onto the verandah. It was a novelty until they bigger. Yours will never be that big, but he looks happy and content. Smart cat.

  18. Mimi says:

GAH! A Cat on the counter! hahahaha Yea, our cats aren’t allowed on the counter or the table. My aunt on the other hand, her cats have free reign to walk wherever they choose in her home. =)

  19. amy says:

I just got a new kitten and I hate to see him up on the countertops for the same reason. But so far, he’s not listening too well!

My dachshund is always trying to get up on our counters, too. And she knows she’s banned, as well. Silly animals.

  21. Kitties Blue says:

They all flaunt every rule ever made and turn a deaf ear and blind eye to all requests to comply. Guess my gang sees safety in numbers. Mauricio can be told to get down off the counter, totally ignore us, be put down manually, and run through this scenario over and over and over again! Magellan does look quite cute with the front paw dangle. Hugs, Janet

  22. Kilo wishes he could reach the counter! Happy Wednesday 🙂

  23. Mary Denman says:

So precious! How a hard counter can be comfortable is beyond me, but Magellan sure looks happy!

    Have a great day Ramona!

  24. Colette S says:

    Haha I know the renegade.
I have one that is exploring also.
I have rules about the kitchen and a ledge upstairs that he could fall from and be hurt.
    Not sure it will work…

  25. Isn’t it funny how animals act like kids at times? They know they aren’t supposed to do something and yet they do it anyhow just to see if they can defy the odds. lol

  26. Robin says:

Oh, that Magellan! He is so cute that it would be hard to move him. My kitties are rebels too. They love causing mischief around here. 🙂

Alice and Arya no longer get up on the counter (unless the window is open, or they spot various critters outside), now that I’ve moved the water dish to the bathtub. Alice makes a mess when she drinks water and mom has hardwood floors in the kitchen so we were keeping the water dish in the sink. However, even with a stool, it was becoming more and more difficult for Alice to get up there. Hence, water dish in the bathtub. We don’t really have many rules for the cats. They’re brats. Alice loves to lounge on the kitchen table…while we’re eating. Just kidding…we DON’T allow that, but she will do it if we let her. lol

    Magellan is a stinker. 😉

  28. For some reason ours don’t counter hop much at all. Except when I leave the treat packet open……
