Kit Kat & Lucy – Book Review

Have you ever moved from one place to another – or, perhaps, from from one season in your life to another – only to discover that the transition did not go as smoothly as you envisioned?

Perhaps you found it harder to enjoy your new surroundings than you imagined. Perhaps you woke up and found yourself missing the things and the life you left behind. Regardless, you suddenly found yourself struggling with dark emotions that were not your friend.

If these experiences resonate and the prospect of having a feline companion or two by your side to help you through the rough patches in life sounds appealing, may I suggest Kit Kat & Lucy: The Country Cats Who Changed A City Girl’s World for your reading list?

Kit Kat And Lucy

Kit Kat & Lucy is the true story of Lonnie Hall DuPont – an accomplished author who shares how her move from the vibrant city of San Francisco to a quiet farnhouse in Michigan sparks within her an intense sense of isolation and a deep longing for something more in her life.

As if sensing a home with a void, stray cat Kit Kat – an obsessive-compulsive tortoiseshell named after a kitschy wall clock and Lucy – a playful Russian Blue who can catch bats in the air – find themselves to Lucy’s farmhouse and into her life within a year of one another.

There are so many aspects of this story that animal lovers – particularly cat people – will relate too. For example, when a stray shows up on our doorstep, our desire to take in a new pet can also be tempered by practical issues such as allergies (which Lonnie’s husband has!), unresolved issues from our past, and how/whether to introduce a cat into an existing feline household. Learning how the Lonnie and her husband work through these issues will be beneficial for many pet owners and cat parents to be!

As you would expect, there are plenty of fun, funny and heartwarming stories about the cats and their humans in this book. But, what I like most about Kit Kat & Lucy is how it reveals so many aspects of the feline-human bond – from the sensitivity of cats to our emotions and the healing power of their presence to the delight and joy we experience when we open our hearts and embrace the gift of a stray in our lives!

Tsunami and I give Kit Kat & Lucy a big paws up and are sharing it as this week’s pick in our 2017 What An Animal Reading Challenge!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Revell Reads. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
