Wordless Wednesday – How To Photograph Your Cat

Magellan The Charmer 2

Welcome To Wordless Wednesday At Create With Joy!

Tips On Photographing Your Cat

Happy Wordless Wednesday to you, dear friends! Today I’d like to speak to you paparazzi pet parents who love to chase your favorite felines around the house with your smartphones in hand, trying to capture photos of those sometimes elusive, camera-shy cats you cohabitate with – who can relate?

Well, I’ll share a little secret with you that I’ve learned over the years. Cats are like people – they don’t always want to have their photo taken! Even Magellan – who oozes with purr-sonality in his shots – has days when he simply refuses to look at the camera!

Cats are most cooperative when they are well-fed, happy, and relaxed (nothing will ruin a photo shoot faster than a loud, unexpected sound!) Here are a few tips to help your photo sessions go smoothly and your photos turn out beautifully!

Magellan-OXO

  • Photograph your cats in sunlight or the brightest possible setting whenever possible – do your best to avoid using the flash! Flashes scare cats and can cause them to run from the camera – for your cat’s sake, avoid it!

  • Be patient – prepare to take a lot of photos! The more photos you take, the greater your chance of taking a winning photo! Cats move quickly and blurry movements can ruin the perfect photo. Shoot now, edit and delete later!

  • Try to capture your cat’s features, essence and personality through close-ups. Add variety by taking photos from your cat’s level, vantage and viewpoint as well!

  • When possible, recruit a friend or family member to play with your kitty so that you can take action shots. Your assistant can also focus your kitty’s attention in a certain direction as you take your shot (this can save you a lot of time!)

    Magellan In His Cat Ball

  • If you are preparing a photo shoot, prep your background in advance – but don’t shy away from impromptu photos! Sometimes you’ll capture the best photos of your cats when they are relaxed and have perched themseleves in what you consider less than ideal settings!

  • Finally, pay attention to your cat’s cues throughout the process and be sensitive to his or her needs. Some days, my cats are eager to interact, pose, and have their photos taken – they happily ham it up on those days – and on other days, they clearly do not want to be bothered. Love them enough to give them their space when they are having a bad hair day and to capture them for all eternity when they are having their day in the sun!

I love photographing my cats and sharing their pictures with you – and I love seing photos of your pets as well!

The tip of getting down on your cat’s level is the best. I always try to do that. My cats ONLY do cute things when they are in an area where the background is busy! MOL. That’s cats!
