Open When – Letters To Lift Your Spirits by Karen Salmansohn
If you’re looking for a unique gift to give a friend, Open When – Letters To Life Your Spirit by Karen Salmansohn is as likely to catch your eye as it did mine. This book – described as an “emergency inspiration kit designed to lift the spirits” – contains twelve inspirational messages tucked away in beautifully illustrated envelopes, waiting for the recipient to open like a surprise gift that comes when you need it the most.
Unfortunately, while this book held great potential, it did not quite live up to my personal expectations!
What I like most about Open When…Letters To Life Your Spirits are the soft, watercolor illustrations. They are absolutely perfect and exactly what I hoped to discover inside.
However – aside from the beautiful illustrations – the rest of the book left me feeling rather disappointed.
First, the book is tiny – much smaller than I expected it to be. I ordered this book as a gift for a friend but, after reading it, feel that it is not substantial enough to stand on its own – at best, it is gift basket or stocking stuffer material.
Next, most of the content did not work for me. Several of the messages were trite; several were based on Buddhist philosophy; none of them provided new inspiration or insights to me.
I wish that I could recommend this book to you but, regrettably, I can’t. As much as I love the concept and enjoyed the beautiful illustrations, this book just did not enrich my life.
I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Thank you for being honest and for sharing this book. It would catch my eye, for sure. I love letters and the idea that is behind this book.
Hi Linda, thanks for stopping by! I had such high hopes for this book – I had brought it for a friend – it just wasn’t what I expected or what she would want. It is a beautifully illustrated book though – I know it will appeal to a different reader!
I’d still be curious to flip through this one as I am struggling right now.
I’m sorry you are going through such a difficult time Christy – congrats to you on starting your blog! 🙂
That’s a shame the book was a disappointment. I was looking forward to finding out more from the title alone!
I know Sarah – it’s such a shame when things don’t turn out quite the way you hope!
Thanks for sharing your honest review at Literacy Musing Mondays.
Thanks for your honest thoughts. I’m sorry the messages inside weren’t all that innovative. I do like the look of it though, like you said. I’ve seen similar books around but YOU actually write the notes for the envelopes, and I like that idea better.

That sounds like an awesome idea – I have not seen one of those books but I love the concept Lauren!
