Be Light – Shining God’s Beauty, Truth, And Hope Into A Darkened World
Have you ever felt like you live in a world that seems to be growing increasingly dark? When you follow the news and hear one bad report after another, it’s easy to see why so many people around us live in despair.
And yet, those of us who are followers of God are not called to curl up in a corner and wait for Christ to return for His people.
Instead, we are called to go out and be light to a dark and dying world!
In his inspiring book Be Light: Shining God’s Beauty, Truth, And Hope Into A Darkened World, Samuel Rodriguez – a man described by CNN as America’s most influential Latino Evangelical leader – takes us on an in-depth study of how light is used in the Bible so that we’ll better understand how to fulfill our role as “the light of the world”.
Be Light – the first book that I’ve seen on this topic – is fascinating. Here are a few things of note from the book:
- Light is the first thing that God speaks into existence – and the first thing proclaimed good in the Bible!
- To some degree, we have all survived seasons of darkness in our lives. God brings us through these seasons so that we can expose the darkness and shine a light on them!
- We fight an ongoing spiritual battle in which someone is trying to hide and turn off our light. Whose plans do we need to uncover and defeat? God wants us to shine our lights brightly, like cities on a hill!
Be Light is an easy yet enlightening book to read. It contains 30 relatively short chapters with a reflection at the end. While the author writes sequentially, I did not find it essential to read the book in order.
Through Be Light, Samuel Rodriguez issues God’s people a clarion call to live in the light, to be light, and to shine light into the darkness – the same call that God gives us in Scripture.
