Derwent Coloursoft Pencils – Review

Let’s kick things off with a colorful start by peeking inside a set of 36 Derwent Coloursoft Pencils and giving them a test run!

I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for the perfect set of pencils to color with! To be honest, there are so many good brands out there that picking the perfect pencil probably depends on the attributes you’re looking for.

What features do you like and dislike in colored art pencils?

I tend to gravitate towards colored pencils with softer leads. When I color, I like rich colors that glide on the paper smoothly and effortlessly, without requiring me to press down hard or apply excessive pressure to build up color. I’m partial to brands that offer pencils in a wide range of lightfast colors. Beautiful packaging is my kryptonite. And quality materials that last will reel me in every time!

A tall order to fill? Perhaps – but let’s see how the Derwent Coloursoft Pencils stack up!

The first thing I noticed about the Derwent Coloursoft Pencils is the lovely tin that it’s packaged in. This protective tin allows you to see all of the colors in the range at a glance while keeping them safe from damage in their individual slots.

The next thing I appreciated was the design of the pencil itself. The pencil casing is color-coded so that you can see at a glance which brand of Derwent pencil you are working with. Next, the ends of the pencils are color coded so that you can see at a glance what color each pencil is. Finally – unlike many art products – the pencils are actually assigned real color names (not just numbers!) I appreciate that because, I always know when I am looking for Mint Green – but I never, in a million years, will remember to look for color “C470”!

Now it was time to see how well the Derwent Coloursoft Pencils performed. Based on my preferences, I like soft, creamy pencils with good pigmentation, like Prismacolor. How would these new pencils measure up?

I spent some time familiarizing myself with my new pencils on a piece of scrap paper, then chose an image from Bernadette Kazmarski’s Creative Cat Coloring Book to color! The Derwent Coloursoft Pencils were easy to work with – the colors went on smooth with good coverage and without the need for excess pressure to get the intensity you wanted. Although coloring was smooth, the lead did not seem quite as soft as Prismacolor – making these a nice alternative for those who find Prismacolor leads a little too soft for their taste. The colors did not seem quite as bright as the Prismacolors – which again, you might like or dislike depending on your color preferences.

In summary, the Derwent Coloursoft Coloring Pencils are artist quality wax-based pencils which come in size ranges up to 72 colors. They were a pleasure to color with and earned high marks in the packaging department, in performance, and for durability.
