An Update On Tsunami

Tsunami - Peaceful Moments

First and foremost, thanks to all of you who prayed for Tsunami, left comments expressing your love and concern for him, and wrote me privately requesting updates on his health. I’m sorry I was not able to respond to you all personally – this has been a very challenging week and has required more energy than I have to give – but the good news is, Tsunami is still with us!

Over the past week, however, Tsunami has been struggling. He began exhibiting muscle weakness, particularly in his back hind legs, which impacted several of his daily activities (including his litter box usage). He also began to have some issues with incontinence as well. We consulted with an online vet who narrowed it down to three possible causes, while we called all over town trying to book him a vet appointment. This proved to be a challenging task because of COVID-19 backlog. Our vet (the earliest appointment we could book based on our calls) could not schedule us until this weekend – but, a friend was able to get us into her vet “between scheduled calls” on Monday and we have been back twice this week.

So the three things the online vet thought we might be dealing with were renal disease, hyperthyroidism or diabetes and, based on Tsunami’s diagnostic tests, my poor baby has Diabetes (plus a Urinary Tract infection).

The good news, based on what the vet says, is that the condition is treatable. The bad news is that it is VERY expensive, is going to require a lot of vet appointments and a lot of lifestyle changes for everyone (including Magellan) which are going to be challenging to implement.

Since we have just learned about his condition, we are still acclimating to the news and have lots to learn about diabetes treatment, but what we know so far is that Tsunami will require a special diet (we ordered the food today) and insulin shots twice a day for life (he has a human med, so we had to go to Costco to get it!) His feeding schedule will have to be on a strict 12-hour schedule (2 feedings, twice a day, 12 hours apart). He will have to go to the vet every 2 weeks for up to 4 months in order for them to monitor his glucose and adjust his insulin amounts until we find out the right amount for him. Then, we will bring him in quarterly or so for regular monitoring.

The vet says that as the meds start to work and we get his levels right, he should start to regain weight and we should see the rest of the bad symptoms disappear. But, the vet also said that he is 70 years old in people years and so we will have to wait to see what a full recovery looks like for him.

Tsunami received antibiotics for his Urinary Tract infection today and will get his first insulin shot either tonight or tomorrow (we have to figure out the 12-hour cycle that is going to work best for everyone’s schedule).

Please continue to pray for Tsunami’s recovery, for Magellan (who is VERY stressed out by all of the changes in his brother and in his environment), and for us (we are worn to the bone).

We know that many of you are pet parents, so if you have any experience with cat diabetes, please feel free to share any tips with us!

Sending continuing purrayers and Power of the Paw to Tsnunami (& Magellan…and you)

There are several Facebook groups that deal with feline diabetes. Just search “cats with diabetes” on Facebook. There will be advice and a chance just to talk to others too.

We are sure praying for dear Tsunami and diabetes is treatable. Our Zoe was diabetic and went into remission and that’s not what caused her demise, it was a cancer. If Tsunami won’t eat that food try Fancy Feast Pate, any flavor, they work well for diabetic cats. I am surprised the Vet isn’t having you do home testing though. If you need any info or want to discuss just let me know. The insulin shots are easy to give, but have some Karo Syrup on hand (dark) in case he goes into insulin shock, a finger full will raise the glucose levels back up quickly. There’s also a terrific Facebook Group for Diabetic Cats and it’s a wealth of information. Hugs from all of us and thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop.

I will continue to pray for your sweet boy. Thank you for hosting.

I’m so sorry to hear Tsunami has diabetes but glad he can be treated. One of my son’s cats was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and she has to take a daily pill. Getting a cat to take a pill is a challenge until we found out she’ll swallow it in tuna fish. Hope your kitty feels better soon!

So happy to hear that at least you have answers and appropriate treatment for Tsunami. Hopefully your stress will ease now. Thank you for hosting and have a wonderful week.

  7. Joanne says:

I am relieved to hear he is still with you. Our cat developed problems with his thyroid when he was somewhere between 70-80 in human years and though the meds were not fun to get him to take they certainly did help.

  8. Thank you so much for hosting this friendship Friday link party. My thoughts for Tsunami to continue to heal.

    Hi Ramona.

Hope you got my email about Tsunami. We are glad you at least have a diagnosis now. We are praying and purring that the vet can get his diabetes regulated and that he’ll be feeling better once that happens. Please do keep us all posted, okay?

    Hugs, and thanks for hosting.

  10. Ramona, I am so glad that Tsunami’s condition is treatable! It is challenging when pets have these conditions. Our cat boys both suffered from kidney disease in later life, so were on tablets for about 5 years. I would feel daunted by the injections, but that said, it was always so hard to get the pills into the cats, and I worried so when I found the pills under the sofa and didn’t know which cat had hidden them! Once Tsunami gets over the UTI and gets used to his meds, I am sure he will have a new lease of life. Thinking of you all as you navigate this new season.

  11. Saying prayers for the whole family. Glad that you got an answer on what has been wrong with Tsunami.

Sending more prayers and positive thougths.

  12. Thanks for hosting another great party. Hope the rest of your week is incredible!

  13. Kitties Blue says:

There definitely will be a lot of changes for you, the family and the kitties, but what a relief to get news that Tsunami can be treated. I will definitely add him to my prayers. POTP & Hugs, Janet and Kitties Blue
