In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day by Mark Batterson – Book Review
Sometimes, God reveals his greatest truths to us in the most obscure passages of Scripture.
When Mark Batterson was 19 years old, he heard a pastor preach a sermon about a man named Benaiah who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day and killed it. He could hardly believe that this story was in the Bible, so he looked it up (2 Samuel 23:20-21). Apparently, he couldn’t get what he calls “one of the most inconceivable and inspirational passages in Scripture” out of his head. He decided that if he ever wrote a book, it would be about that passage of Scripture.
Since then, Mark Batterson – a nationally renown pastor and New York Times best-selling author who has written many books – says that In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day – How To Survive And Thrive When Opportunity Roars, which was first published on October 16, 2006 and has just been released in a special 10-year anniversary edition featuring all-new bonus material – is “more than a book to me. It’s my life message my life motto: Chase the lion.”
In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day is a highly inspirational book that asks each of us to look at our lives and our problems in a whole new way. The book challenges us to ask the question:
What if the life you really want and the future God wants for you are hiding right now in your biggest problem, your worst failure – your greatest fear?
In times of stress – in the face of fear – our natural tendency is to play it safe and sometimes, even to be paralyzed into inaction by the circumstances we face, but Mark provides us with biblical reasons and encourages us through godly examples of how to conquer our fears, to stop running away from the things that scare us, and to start chasing after the God-ordained opportunities that cross our path.
Author and pastor Craig Groeschel says:
Mark has become one of the most important voices for a new generation. Anything he touches changes lives. Read this book and you’ll see what I mean.
I could not agree more. If you are looking for an inspirational, life-changing book to read, I recommend In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day to you!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Fun to read this review, because I just recently heard a podcast in which Mark was interviewed and spoke about this very book.
He just released a follow-up to this book which I haven’t read yet but I believe it’s flying off the shelf like hotcakes!
From what I read here this sounds like a book for all to read to help them fight there challenges and not run from their fears. It’s really kind of a book from teenagers on up. It’s interesting how the author heard in his early years and it stuck in his head until he could write about it himself. What a concept huh?
Sounds rather relatable and malleable enough for each reader to mold and make his or her own. The test would be in its application. May be worth the read. 🙂
I hope my boys find a passage that similarly inspires them and directs their life in this way! Thanks for sharing this post at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com this week!
