Detours by Tony Evans – Book Review
God has a purpose and a plan for our lives – even when we cannot envision one for ourselves.
Often, His plans and purposes only come into focus after we are at the end of our rope – when we have detoured so far off of the path that we mapped out for ourselves, that only He can make straight our paths and navigate our course.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation that you just couldn’t find a way out of? Perhaps you’re in the midst of a detour now: a situation that has taken you off of your original path – a situation you didn’t plan or prepare for – a disruption that stands between you and your goals.
How do we get back on track and handle the inevitable detours in life that we will face? Tony Evans provides great scriptural insight and practical advice in his latest book, Detours: The Unpredictable Path To Your Destiny.
One surprising thing I learned from Tony’s book is that detours aren’t always a bad thing – in fact, they can be a good thing!
Divinely designed detours are positive interruptions designed to divert down a better path so that we might have the opportunity to reach our destination at all.
God often uses detours as part of his plan to purify, prune and perfect us – a process that isn’t always pleasant. The good news about detours is that God uses them to move us into the next level of our spiritual development. The bad news is that things in our life may get worse before they get better.
Development is often a painful process of breaking us of our own ambitions and independence so we can live a life of surrender and obedience before God. God creates detours in order to perform some construction on our soul. He has to chip away at the parts that don’t fit where He is taking us. He has to strengthen the things that aren’t ready for our destiny just yet. And depending on how we respond to our detours, we may need to be road-blocked several times before reach where we are supposed to go.
Tony is a great teacher who brings Detours to life through clear expository teaching, real-life examples and a journey through the life of Joseph. As you read this book, you’ll learn what detours are, how they relate to your destiny, and how to navigate through the detours God has planned for your life.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
