The first thing I remember wanting to be as a child
Was an astronomer.
I was fascinated by the stars and loved tracking constellations.
I did not love math, however, so that dream was short-lived.
Next I wanted to be an animal behaviorist.
I thought it would be so cool to study wildlife.
But – after thinking about what that job would entail –
It was back to the drawing board for me!
Then I turned my sights to books.
I loved to read and thought being a librarian would be ideal.
Imagine reading and being surrounded by books all day!
But – after working in the school library for a year –
And discovering how solitary a place a library could be –
I decided the library was not the place for a social butterfly like me!
So I decided to focus on writing.
There my creativity bloomed!
It’s expressed itself in different ways over the years.
The writing dreams of my youth has
Morphed into different realities in adulthood…
But yes, I consider writing a childhood dream
That I have made come true!

Great question…what did I want to be when I grow up??? I played teacher…sat my dolls in rows, had the blackboard, chalk and everything! I was going to be a teacher! I then took an Intro to Education my freshman year of college as well as Intro to Sociology…Sociology won out…and Social Work it was!!! However, after graduation I went on to pursue the Master in Education…I REALLY DO love children 🙂 …but, I found that I social work was where my heart was!
So, I wanted to be a TEACHER!!! You ask anyone who knew me…my mother was so upset when I changed my major…thinking I would be disappointed with my change in majors. I even taught at a daycare parttime in high school!
Funny stuff…thanks for a walk down memory lane…funny how things change…
Oh yeah…can also through in that I’ve been a paralegal! I’ve loved them ALL!!!

Isn’t that the truth…
it is interesting to look over the paths that we once considered…and, still “when I grow up”…
As we’ve both touched on before, I think, “things change” sometimes without our consent due to circumstances…I NEVER would have thought that I would be blogging and loving it…BUT, here I am…where my path has lead me!!!
Our life takes many twists and turns during…we just have to TRUST HIM!!!
I just love your questions and the thought process that it brings out in me…

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a waitress. My mom would buy me those pads with the carbon on them. My dream came true in college and it quickly became a nightmare (:

How funny! Being a waitress is one thing I’ve NEVER wanted to be! But I can relate because when I was a little girl I always thought it would be AWESOME to work in a big store, surrounded by all sorts of cool stuff! (I guess this was after the allure of being surrounded by books wore off – bye bye library, hello mall!) Anyway I worked through college doing retail and let me tell you – that was motivation to get that degree!
But – there is nothing that I admire more than a good waitress or waiter who truly derives pleasure in providing good service! My mom waited for a good part of her life and although it was physically demanding and paid little, she always used it as an example of honest work!
Growing up I had wanted to be an astronaut. I was not good at science or math so that didn’t last long. The next think that interested me was children as I was always babysitting. So here I am fulfilling that dream as a preschool aide shaping young children’s minds.

I have accomplished so many of my childhood dreams, but not always in the way I wanted or dreamed I would do them. I traveled with a carnival, was a writer for school publications and worked for a national magazine, although doing cut and paste up. I wanted to work with animals, which I did in several capacities and as I tried to add on my blog now I work FOR the animals.

So happy to hear that you’ve accomplished so many of your childhood dreams – I think that the seeds are there early on, even if the shape they take changes over time! 🙂
I wanted to grow up and be a nurse – but then I discovered I don’t have the stomach for all the blood and gore, so gave up that ‘dream’. 😉

Happy Friday! When I was about 5 I wanted to work in a grocery store, and drive a VW bug ~ neither of these ended up happening I’ve always enjoyed writing and sometimes even today dream of writing a book. I don’t know if this will ever happen, but I love writing on my blog 🙂

I had always wanted to be a teacher (then a mom) and once I was working in the schools I was really disappointed with the school system and the parents and changed my career to helping at risk youth and LOVED doing that!! No I am a MOM… seriously didn’t think it would be as challenging as it can be but wouldn’t change it for the world!! 🙂 SO I would say that I have and will continue to reach my childhood goals and dreams!!

Hi Joy ~~ I’m participating in Thursday Two Questions which you linked to.
1. When I was young and on the farm during the war, I observed the scrap man collecting recyclables along with other junk which was dumped in the junk pile. I loved to scrounge around for things in the junk pile. Why ever in the world I would have been there I can’t remember except that I was there with my dad who hauled his own trash.
Sooo, I wanted to be a junk man. 🙂
Also on my list, probably at my horrified mother prompting, wanted to be a fireman.
2. Of course I never did either of those. After my Army time where I learned electronics and computer repair I became an Aerospace Engineer mainly at NASA Houston. Most of my time there I was going to school in the evenings, for eleven years. When I finished college I became a Business Professor at a local community college, teaching Business Law (my doc degree was law), Entrepreneurship (my bachelor degree was a B.S. in Economics) and Introduction to Business courses.

I once had the opportunity to work on a NASA contract – was SO excited about the offer – but I received a simultaneous offer for a different job that paid substantially more and was much closer to home so in the end I turned it down. I always thought that would have been such an exciting project to be a part of though. You really accomplished a lot thru hard work! 🙂

hi there – it’s been a few weeks – but better late than never.
You know what is funny….I actually want to become a librarian right now because I love being surrounded by books and like to encourage others to read. I don’t want to be the kind that checks out books, but one that develops programs for the library, researches the kinds of books to order, and possibly heads their social media presence.
I also wouldn’t mind becoming the kind of librarian that sits in a dungeon and researches things for companies. My family calls me the ‘Google Secretary’ because they are constantly calling me up to get the answer to something for them or research something.
I just posted my answer on my blog and we have a few things in common. I forgot to mention that I was really into astronomy, archeology, and dinosaurs when I was younger

I am not doing anything I wanted to be when I was a little girl. As a little girl, I had fancy dreams, to be a Jeanie, to be a movie star, a princess -you know all those lala things. Glad I grew out of it, otherwise, I would still be bumming around homeless. hahaha Have a great weekend Ramona

The one fanciful dream that I always had was to be a lead singer in a rock band – which, of course, was never going to happen because I am not blessed with “The Voice”! But – it’s still fun to dream. Of course, knowing what I do now about the music industry – I’m glad God had other plans for me!

Visiting from “Two Question Thursday”. What great questions! I remember wanting to be a nurse and knowing that I would be a mommy someday. I didn’t end up going to nursing school, but worked in early childhood for several years, so I did a lot of caregiving anyway. 🙂 I am now a stay at home mommy and I love it! Secretly, I also wanted to be a novelist, which I suppose could still happen. But for now, blogging a few times a week is a victory!! Thanks for sharing and I’m going to make a point to visit back this weekend to see what your topic is. 🙂
