Upcoming Questions For The Book Blogger’s Hop!

Question Of The Week
How do you handle the writing of a negative review?

My Answer
I am a positive person so
It gives me no pleasure to write negative reviews.
When I write a review,
I do my best to be honest and fair
Striving to live by the Golden Rule!

I research the books and authors I review beforehand,
Whenever possible, to increase the chances I receive a book I like!

Sometimes, however, for reasons I cannot foresee,
A book does not live up to my expectations
And I must ask myself, “Why?”

Is the book stylistically well written but missing the mark in some key areas?
Does the book promise more than it delivers?

Perhaps the book does not measure up to similar books in its genre
Or other books by the same author.

Maybe I cannot recommend the book due to its content.

Then again, perhaps the book’s premise is fine
But it contains other major flaws
Such as being poorly written or insufficiently researched.

As a reviewer, it’s up to me
To accurately assess and honestly communicate
Both the positive and negative aspects of a book
To my readers in a fair and balanced way
So that they can determine if the book interests them!

Now it’s your turn to share! Please leave your answers in the comments and – if you’re visiting from the Book Lover’s Blog Hop, please leave your link so I can visit! New followers, welcome – please let me know how you’re following so that I can reciprocate!

I just started this series of book reviews for new authors and your question is one that I grappled with before I pushed that publish button. Would love it if you can give me feedback (positive or negative) on my casual review style. Happy FF.

Great and thorough answer to your reasons in writing a negative review. It is up to us as a reviewer to “honestly communicate both positive and negative aspects of book.”
    Well put!

  6. Phaedra Seabolt says:

I thankfully have not had to write a negative review yet. What I would do is state what I didn’t like but also try to balance it with the things I thought the author did well.

  7. fakesteph says:

This is why I went to structured reviews. For me, it is easier to evaluate the elements that I find most important when reading. I always try to figure out WHY something wasn’t working for me. Sometimes, it’s something like “This character reminded me of someone who broke my heart and I hated him for it, but you probably won’t”. Reading is soooo subjective . And I appreciate you trying to stay positive! I don’t unfollow for negative reviews, but I unfollow people who have a disproportionate amount of negative reviews… at that point they are just being critical to be critical.

  8. Patti Smith says:

I try very hard to be balanced as well…to make room for differences of opinion between myself and other bloggers as well as authors. I believe wholeheartedly in varied personal responses to books and encourage just that.

  10. What have I been missing out on. A Book Blogger Hop sounds like something I would enjoy. I am so far behind on blogging it worries me but this North Forty keeps me busy.
I have missed you my sweet friend and was thinking of you this morning.
So loved my visit. I will check out the site you mentioned here.

  11. Everyone wants to read honest reviews to help them decide if they want to read a book. It’s good that you can point out the positive points as well as anything you honestly feel is negative.
