Thought For The Day
Keep your head above water!

Maine Coons are one of several cat breeds that love to play with water. Tsunami and Legend are no exceptions to this rule! They are attracted to dripping faucets like magnets. They like to swat at water drops and drink out of running faucets. They not only love their personal drinking fountains, they are frequently seen swimming in them like they are trying to cross the English Channel!

Recently, I began putting down extra water bowls to help keep them hydrated. As you can see, Tsunami had other plans for these bowls! After catching him soak in his water bowl for the umpteenth time, I get the distinct impression that what he really wants is a small wading pool to play in for the summer. What do you think? Should I succumb to his latest cat whim?

  8. Before purchasing a kiddy/kittie pool you might want to test out their reaction to the bathtub. If you catch them taking a dip then a pool would probably be a great investment.

Your Maine Coons are gorgeous and so fluffy. I would give in and buy them a wading pool. I always spoil my animals and then tell them – you are so spoiled. My cat enjoys drinking from the bath tap as well. She also enjoys drinking from the fish pond and she stares longingly at the fish, but she is too old and slow to catch them now.

    • In my previous home I had an indoor koi and goldfish pond and my Maine Coons (a different pair) used to LOVE watching the fish! They were kittens then and they never chased or bothered the fish – as a matter of fact, the fish would come up to them and they’d almost make kissy-faces at each other! It was the most amazing thing to watch!

I always tell my boys they have no clue how good they have it. They just stare at me and tell me to bring them some more turkey! 🙂

  10. My daughter and son have cats who love to dabble under the faucet…they intentionally leave the bathtub on a slow drip…just for their “kids”…:)JP

  11. Of COURSE you do…as if there are any questions about who RULES in our homes? We kittehs, of course! Hmmm, a wading pool? We may have to lobby for one too!

Definitely get him a pool! He will love it especially in the wicked heat. He is so cute!!!

We purchased a small hard plastic wading pool for our dogs. Usually they just drink out of it, but one of our labs will step in as he drinks the water. Yes, do get your babies a small pool. Or a tub of some kind or even a dish pan that is large enough to lay in.

  15. Cats that like water , especially to get in it, are a rarity. I had a kitten once who loved water. We had a large pond in our back yard and he used to jump in and swim across. He was so little, I was afraid one of the fish was going to get him. Guess what his name was? Minnow!

Both Alice and Arya love water…drinking it. I have to keep the water bowl in the bathroom sink because Alice likes to drink with her paw sometimes. If I keep it on the floor or counter, she makes an awful mess. They like it though because every time I go to the bathroom, I fill the bowl up with fresh water. Yes, they’re quite spoiled!
