The Gospel Centered Woman by Wendy Alsup
One topic that is popular in many Christians circles is how “good” Christian women should lead their lives. Some authors emphasize natural differences between men and women, clearly delineating proper roles for each. Others identify certain biblical women as role models that women should emulate. A few focus on illuminating specific passages based on their understanding and interpretation – often to such an extent it feels they are pushing their own personal agendas.
What are our roles as women – in our homes, in our churches, in life?
Who did God create us to be?
If you find yourself grappling with these questions – if you feel that there’s more to these topics than most books address – than I highly recommend The Gospel Centered Woman by Wendy Alsup!
The Gospel Centered Woman – Understanding Biblical Womanhood through the Lens of the Gospel is an intelligently written book that helps us to understand God’s plan for our lives from a theological perspective.
The book is based on Wendy’s belief that no matter who you are – no matter what stage you are at in your life – no matter what you have done – the gospel was written for you.
Wendy says:
There is something in the gospel that meets wounded women in their brokenness.
There is also a particular balm to women that meets us in the woundings tied specifically to our gender.
The Gospel Centered Woman is divided into three parts:
- Section 1, Created In God’s Image, examines who God created His daughters in perfection to be, and explores how the fall of man impacted God’s perfect plan.
- Section 2, Redeemed To Reflect God Once More, explores how Jesus Christ redeemed what we lost during the fall.
- Section 3, Wisdom In The Tension, navigates the common roadblocks we need to avoid as we examine the Scriptures that deal with women.
Wendy provides a page of Reflection at the end of each chapter where you can record your personal notes and questions, and Discussion Questions at the end of the book for those who would like to study this book in a group setting.
Biblical womanhood can be a touchy topic to navigate, but The Gospel Centered Woman exceeds all expectations. This theologically sound book is foundational reading for anyone who wants to more accurately understand and interpret the passages on women in Scripture. If you’re looking for a writer who will make you think deeply – Wendy’s your woman. I highly recommend this book.
