This Week’s Theme – Time

This week, my husband and I have been having a fascinating conversation about the concept of time. We’ve been discussing how various cultures perceive time in different ways. For instance, in the Western world, we tend to think of time as measured by calendars and dates – chronological time, if you will. We’re always in a rush and we never have enough time to do anything because we are always measuring our lives against the ever ticking measure of a clock.

In other cultures, however, time is perceived as seasonal – to everything there is a season – a time and place for everything. Things happen when they are supposed to happen. Life is not measured by a ticking clock, but rather, by the natural flow of things. In our culture, we see the trees. In other cultures, they view the forest.

With these things in mind, I thought I’d ask some questions that relate to time this week.

  • If you had the time to do just “one more thing” each day – what would it be?
  • Do you tend to fill every moment of your day with “stuff”? What would a free day feel like?
  • Do you tightly keep tabs on your time (calendars, organizers, to do lists) or do you go with the flow?

We look forward to reading your thoughts on “Time” in the comments and in your Friendship Friday posts at this week’s Friendship Friday celebration!

Happy Friday! I’ve survived another week with hubby at sea. Missing him terribly and only just coping with all the extra work I take on while he is away. You would think I would be use to these trips by now but having moved far too many times and this time over 4000 km from family and friends, I don’t have my usual support system.

Looking forward to finding a lot of new blogs to keep me occupied over the weekend.

I know what it’s like to have a husband that travels – it doesn’t get any easier!
I also know what it’s like to move away from your normal support system.
You’re welcome to drop me a line if you need some “online” support or would like to chat.
Otherwise, happy hopping – if you exhaust all of your possibilities here, check out Inspire Me Monday! 🙂

I would love to do more digital scrapbooking. It would be great to get all my photo albums up to date and even create some scrapbook pages … I would gladly accept some extra time for that! Have a great Labor Day weekend! 🙂

That would be an awesome use of extra time! I was just remembering how, before I began blogging, I used to spend weekends with my friends scrapbooking. Now, it seems, everyone has moved on. I truly miss those days!

  3. Time, moves too quickly the older we get. Why is it when we were kids that the summers seemed soooo long and now in a blink of an eye summer is over. Why does the concept of time change as we age?

Ohhh, great topic. I am both planner obsessed and I also go with the flow. I know- a walking contradiction! Anyway, and speaking of time, my daughter has me hooked on Dr. Who the BBC series- about a Time Lord and his travels more or less…it is mind blowing! Also about time, have you read Margin by Richard Swenson? (I think that is his name)…I think he addresses some of the cultural issues with time…as always, thanks for hosting! Hugs to the boys!

If time travel interests you, check out my recent review of PT McHugh’s Keeper Of The Black Stones!

The book my husband is reading that prompted this whole “Time” discussion is Misreading Scripture With Western Eyes from Intervarsity Press. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet so he helped himself to it and the report is that it is fabulous! Every night he has been sharing with me new things he has learned and he talked the book up so much, it’s now on a pastor friend’s reading list. Looking forward to reading and reviewing it!

  8. Funny you should ask…back to school time always gets me in the mood to find a new and better way to organize my time. I just created a weekly planner template based off the template I found in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, so I shared my printable (link # 43). I try to plan out my days but with kids, you never know how long something will take and I learned the hard way that my planner has to be flexible. This new method has worked for me so far and helps me juggle my various roles as mom, wife, blogger and individual! Yes, I gotta even plan my “me time”, otherwise I get so wrapped up in helping out my family.

I had some “free” days last week when my in-laws watched my youngest son. How did I spend it? Cleaning out the garage. I tend to use free time to catch up on work unless I am completely exhausted and then I crash in bed in pajamas and read!

Thanks for hosting this fun and friendly hop!

I would paint my nails or do my pedicure everyday if I had that extra time for myself.
I am guilty of filling my time. I need to feel accomplished everyday. I do this to myself and probably drove myself to sickness, but it is almost the only way I feel satisfy.

If I had more time I would do more with my family. A “want to” kind of thing, not a “have to.” A day at the beach as opposed to a day purging the basement. I suppose they both have merits and lessons but lessons at the beach sure sounds a lot better.

We lived in South America for 24 years. It’s hard to take the American time sense out of a person. For example, I knew, I knew that an invitation to a child’s birthday party for 3 meant I should not even consider arriving before 5 and arriving at 6 or even 7 would be okay. But by 4 I was in a state of panic: I was late!

Now that we live back in the states, I find I’m frustrated by Americans. We came to a church picnic supper a few minutes (less than 5) late and everyone was sitting down eating already! Church is over at 12 or 12:05 and we are the last ones to leave at 12:25–in South America we were the first ones to leave an hour after the church service was over. Time was meant to be spent with people, was their concept.

Now I don’t fit in either place, so I just want to use the time God gives me in the way He wants me to.

My husband enjoyed your story Sharon. It is really jarring – once you have been out of the country – to return to our fast-pasted lives!

I once belonged to a small group whose leader “timed” us (during discussions!) and rang a bell if we went over a minute or two!
      Can you imagine!
I did not think much of that bell!

Thanks for sharing, Sharon. Have a blessed week!

  20. Beverly says:

When I was young, my parents used to say, “the older you get the faster the time goes”. That seemed silly to me, until I got older. Now time seems to fly. Not only has the summer flown by, but so has the entire year. It seems like it was just halloween. There will always be too much to do and not enough time. We do like to take time for other things. I think “those other things” are what you enjoy and what makes you happy may not be what makes someone else happy. Enjoying life is what it is all about.
    Have a wonderful weekend,

I SO relate to what you’re sharing about our perception of time changing – over time!
Isn’t it funny how we never have enough time to do anything – yet time itself never actually runs out?

Take time to enjoy those things that really matter and enjoy our weekend Bev!

I would love to just soak my feet while finishing a novel. I’m dreaming of that right now…

    says:

I wrote earlier, but don’t know what happened to it.

We lived in South America for 24 years where people are more important that time. That’s why so many Americans get frustrated with their “tardiness”. They just feel that the person they are with is more important.

You can take the girl out of the states, but not her sense of time. I struggled relaxing my sense of punctuality. Social gatherings were especially hard for me. A birthday party invitation for 3 meant, “Don’t show up till at least 5,” but by 4 I was in a state!

Now I find I have trouble having to arrive 5 minutes early and want to hang around with the people I am with much longer than is cultural here.

But in the end, what is most important?

  23. Ann says:

Its funny my hubs and I are opposite. He makes list and calendars and always say he never has enough time. I tend to go with the flow. My motto is if its important I will make the time. For me time is spent with God, hubs, family and friend. When I do that it’s been a good day!

  24. BeBetsy says:
