Photos Of The Week
Magellan & The Birds
Quote Of The Week
The reason cats climb is so that they can look down
On almost every other animal.
It’s also the reason they hate birds.
K.C. Buffington
Now that Spring has arrived, and the trees are in bloom,
Magellan has become enamored by all the birds that
Fly by our window all day!
Hummingbirds hover eye to eye with him.
Songbirds flitter in and out of the trees.
Crows fly by and startle us with their massive wing spread.
If you have cats and have observed their behavior around birds,
You may be aware of a phenomenon called cat chatter.
Cats exhibit this behavior when they go into hunter mode –
Become riveted to their potential prey –
And then start to move their mouth in a chattering sound,
Making unusual clicks and chirp like sounds that are
Very different from their normal meows!
I’ve exhibited this behavior in all of my Maine Coons over the years and –
Since they have all been indoor cats – I had assumed that
These sounds were involuntary sounds stemming from frustration
For not being able to catch their prey!
Today, however, I read a fascinating article which indicated that
Cat chatter could actually be a part of their natural instinct that
Enables them to mimic their prey – making it easier to catch it in the wild!
Today’s photos show Magellan exhibiting chattering behavior
While watching the birds – and, finally,
Exhibiting a loud wail of frustration because he could not get to them!
How many of you have chattering cats?

If you’ve never seen a cat chatter,
Leo The Cat provides a masterful demonstration in the following video!

That last one of Magellan is awesome. I’ve got collages today and many of them are of Sheela, Amanda’s cat. 🙂

Another interesting fact I just read is that cats are capable of making 100 different sounds – dogs, by contrast, only 10.
Magellan truly has and exhibits a full spectrum of sounds – and that last wail that he let out (documented in that last photo) was a wail I had never heard before!
My cat Seabass chatters at the birds all the time! I also read recently that it is a natural instinct to help them catch their prey and found it fascinating! I had always, like you, thought it was a sound of frustration. It’s amazing to think that they make the sound to “mock” the birds or other creatures they might be trying to stalk.

Isn’t that amazing Cindy?
When I read things like this, it truly makes me want to research more of their natural habits that I sometimes take for granted to learn more about their amazing instincts and personalities! 🙂

Its so much fun for me to watch when they see the small birds, they dont do that funny little noise when its quail or pigeons. Seems to wear them out, they get frustrated and go take a nap. Love the videos. Thanks for the party, linking back this week in my post.
Have a great day~!
Be blessed, Karren

Maybe they only speak certain bird languages! 🙂
By the way, your WW card was just lovely!

How awesome – look forward to visiting Frankie – happy Wordless Wednesday to you Lorraine!
I use to live in a house with a tree right outside the window that squirrels loves to visit. Oh now that was some great fun. The cats and the squirrels would have starting contests!
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Magellan is going to go absolutely nuts when he discovers the squirrels!
Sometimes they come to our kitchen window which is one of Tsunami’s favorite hangouts!
It’s always so funny to hear them chatting like that. Mine are always trying to talk the birds into joining them in the window.
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Magellan loves the birds but I am SO worried that he is going to jump out of the window!
I love letting air in but every time he comes in I have to shut the window so he doesn’t accidentally jump through the screen.
During his play time he emulates them – he jumps from high spots and goes flying across the room with his arms spread like Rocky the Squirrel!
Oh this s amazing…cats chatting?! That Magellan is such a fun cat, so cute too and fun, lol!
Thank you so much for hosting. Have a great week.

Chatter is very common in our house, as there is a bush the robins like to hangout on right in front of the cat’s window. I swear, sometimes I think those birds are taunting the girls.

How cute and funny…. Smart little Magellan !!
That looks like one angry cat! Thanks for hosting & God bless!
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
HI Laurie,
He’s not angry (although he does look rather ferocious there, doesn’t he?)
Our vet says he now has all of his adult teeth in and I think he just wanted to show them all off!
My cat does that too! Too cute!
You’ve really captured it well with your photos. I love it when cats chatter to the birds.
Cat chatter is such an amazing thing to watch. Some of the cats at the shelter even doing it while watching birds on a TV screen! 🙂

Isn’t that amazing? Cats are such fascinating creatures! 🙂
The most unusual chattering behavior in our house comes from Giulietta, who chatters whenever she sees the camera. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

I enjoyed this post! Having put down our long time pet, Patches, a year ago, it was such fun to see the video of the chattering cat. The very first time I saw our Patches do this, I was amazed. And it amazed me for years! So thank you for bringing back fond memories of a most loved cat! Have a great Wednesday!

Yes! My cats have done this often. I even watch my barn cats do it when they are stalking the hummingbirds! Of course, I’ve never seen them catch one.
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
That’s what started this whole photo shoot! Two hummingbirds were flying outside the window!
Unlike Legend, who turned zen watching them hover before his very eyes on his first encounter –
They brought out the hunter instinct in Mighty Magellan!
It’s a very cool thing to watch!
Love the Buffington quote. So true! 🙂 Gorgeous photos of Magellan. 🙂 Here’s my entry for Wordless Wednesday. http://anotherday2paradise.wordpress.com/2014/04/09/wordless-wednesday-stairway-to-heaven/
Your cat is just beautiful and I love looking at all the lovely photos of Magellan! The for the party!
Loved the quote! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I love cat speak!
That’s one chattering cat. Seems totally enthralled with events outside the window!
That’s very interesting! My daughter has a cat who does that when he looks out the window. I’m sending this post to her.

Magellan is so cute! I hope he found some good birds out there. I love it when kitties chirp like birds. 🙂
