Magellan - The Day He Arrived

How Do You Show Your Pets Love?

Four months ago, Magellan – the latest addition to our feline family – sauntered into our lives. As you might imagine, we anticipated his arrival with great excitement. We were eager to bond with Magellan and show him just how much he was loved!

Creating strong bonds of trust with your pets is important – not just only early on, but throughout their entire lives! What are some of the special things you do to show your pets how much you care about them?

Here are a few ways we show our love for our cats:

  • We hold, cuddle, snuggle, pet and groom them!
  • We buy them special toys we know they’ll enjoy.
  • We play with them frequently throughout the day.
  • We stimulate their minds and exercise their bodies.
  • We pro-actively tend to all of their health needs.
  • We feed them the highest quality cat food and treats.
  • We provide them with fresh water at all times.
  • We provide them with clean litter boxes.

Food is a particularly powerful way to bond with your pets. However, it’s important as pet parents to ensure that when you feed your pets, you are nourishing their bodies, not feeding your emotional needs.

Let’s examine why this issue is so important – and what to do if you’ve unintentionally loved our pets with too much food!

Using Food As Love Can Lead To Overweight Pets

Hillspet Cat

One of the most important ways you can love your pets is to maintain their health through a proper, nutritious diet. Sometimes, however, this can be a challenge – especially for loving pet parents!

Many well-meaning pet parents want to show their pets love by feeding them special treats such as table scraps – and most pets are all too eager to wine and dine with us!

It often takes a will of steel to resist Fido and Fluffy when they come begging for the choicest cuts at mealtime!

Sharing an occasional table scrap with your pet might sound innocent enough. However, using food as a means of showing love rather than a way of taking care of our pet’s health and nutritional needs can often lead down a slippery slope of health.

Did you know that showing our pets love through food – too much food – has caused obesity levels in pets to reach an all-time high?

In the last five years, the number of overweight dogs in our country has increased by 37% and the number of overweight cats has increased by 90%!

To further compound the problem, two-thirds of pet owners with overweight pets don’t realize their pets are unhealthy!

It often takes a caring but impartial observer – such as your veterinarian – to break the truth to us.

For more information on this alarming trend, I encourage you to read the Banfield Pet Hospital State Of Pet Health 2012 Report.

  1. Great post Joy 🙂 I do have that problem – want to give treats or food as love and it is something I work on. Thankfully the pets are not overweight but the humans are! pinning to share!

Thank you for pinning and spreading the word!
I think a lot of us have to work on this – it’s one of the first ways we bond with our pets – but it’s important to not go overboard!

Fortunately there are other ways that are just as meaningful to show we care – and fortunately, there is help available when we have loved our pets a little too much in the kitchen! 🙂

I need to get the girls to the vet! Thanks for the gentle reminder. I’m afraid they might put Alice on a diet. She will not be happy. 😉

I SO know what you’ve mean! We plan to have Tsunami scheduled for a wellness visit when things settle down.
His activity level has definitely decreased but his appetite has not and we want to make sure that as he matures he does not live life larger than he should!

(If you hear roaring from our blog – Alice will understand the verdict!)

  4. Let’s just say the dogs get monthly massage therapy. I had my first massage in years a couple of years ago. Love is making sure they are well cared for meeting their needs.
