What They See – How To Stand Out And Shine In Your New Job – Book Review

Are you a recent college graduate who is about to enter the job market for the first time? Could you benefit from a book filled with tips on how to outshine the competition?

Are you returning to the workplace after an extended absence? Do you need to polish your professional skills?

Whether you need just a few pointers or a complete communication makeover, Jennifer Swanson is here to help!

In her new book, What They See – How To Stand out And Shine In Your New Job, Jennifer provides an in-depth assessment of the unspoken things that your employer expects from you and helps you to spotlight your unique talents and assets in the best way possible!

From the moment you walk in the door, Jennifer knows that first impressions count – and she helps you to evaluate every aspect of your professional demeanor.

Here are some of the key topics Jennifer addresses in What They See:

  • Eleven Attributes Of A True Professional
  • Nine Skills Your Employer Wants You To Have
  • What To Wear (based on your work environment, your company’s dress code, and your audience)
  • Nonverbal And Verbal Communication
  • Work Ethic
  • Accountability And How To Learn From Mistakes
  • Stress Management
  • Conflict Management

My favorite chapter of the book is the final one – The Thirty Day Risk Challenge – which encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone, to create new challenges for yourself, and to find creative ways to grow as a person.

I found What They See an extremely easy-to-read and enjoyable book filled with lots of practical advice for today’s professional.

This book would also make an excellent resource for students and career seekers as part of their career development or enhancement program.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I think I may have seen her on TedTalks. I am always fascinated with non-verbals for some reason. I think this would be an interesting read.

    • Jennifer says:

Hi Adrian, wasn’t me on Ted, although I would LOVE to do that! I was onstage in 2012 in NYC doing a similar thing for a group of educators at an event called 140EDU, but that’s as close as I’ve come so far to doing a Tedtalk. I wish you best of luck in the contest, and hope you read it regardless as I’d love to get your feedback. Thanks for the comment, and happy summer!
