Thriving In Babylon by Larry Osborne – Book Review
If you are a Christian who is concerned about the changes that you see happening in our culture and what these things mean for your family and your future, then I’d like to recommend Thriving In Babylon – Why Hope Humility And Wisdom Matter In A Godless Culture by Larry Osborne to you.
In Thriving In Babylon, Larry helps us to put our concerns and fears in perspective by:
- Providing us with an in-depth look at what Daniel faced under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon during Old Testament times.
- Comparing our current culture against those from the past.
- Teaching us how to act wisely and treat others with humility and respect.
Most importantly, Larry reminds us that, no matter what happens, God is always in control.
Thriving In Babylon is an informative and easy-to-read book that provides a lot of insight into the life of Daniel and the challenges he faced – the sovereignty of God – and some of the traps that well-meaning Christians fall into as they try to change the world around them.
The one thing that would improve the book in future editions would be the inclusion of a Discussion Guide as this would be an interesting book to read and discuss as a group.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Thriving In Babylon and learned a lot about Daniel’s culture and ours by reading this book.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Thanks for linking up with Literacy Musing Monday! The book looks interesting. Does it take the approach of Christ against current-day culture? Or is it how to be faithful and still love the culture?

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for stopping by! If you listen to the video, you’ll get a good feel for what the book is about. What I like about the message is that it starts out by giving us a reality check (you think you’ve got it bad today? while we tend to romanticize the past, let’s look at the realities of past generations, who thought THEY were living in the worst of times)… then focuses a lot on how Daniel – in spite of the adverse conditions that he was living under (which he illuminates in ways that you probably haven’t considered before) – always did his best to live out his faith while exhibiting humility and treating others with respect, even when they didn’t deserve it.
So I guess in answer to your question it would be the latter – how to be faithful and loving to others even when our culture isn’t always what we want it to be.
This sounds like a great book! I love the book of Daniel. It is amazing how we are able to watch Biblical prophecy come true before our eyes. I’m from Metro Detroit and the Church of Satan (which is actually a group of atheists) just unveiled their 1-ton statue of Baphomet on the streets of Detroit. I don’t worry because I know that the God I serve isn’t worried. It is just something that speaks volumes about our culture.

Wow, Robin, this book would speak so directly to that! That just like in the days of Nebuchadnezzar, when he was doing all sorts of evil (like building his idol that everyone had to bow down and worship) – that God was still in control and everything that was happening was all a part of his grander plan…
Thanks so much for stopping by and letting us know what’s happening in your city.

Thanks for sharing this book at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com! I appreciate reading your thoughts on it. It’s hard not to be concerned about our culture these days, and I’m glad there are books out there helping us to deal with it without taking a “the sky is falling” approach.
