The Finishing School – Book Review
As a bibliophile, there are few things in life that I enjoy more than finding a book that I love or discovering a author who has the ability to powerfully impact our lives. So, I was thrilled to discover The Finishing School – How One Book Nerd Began Living What She Learned by freshman author Valerie Woerner, which exceeds my criteria on both counts!
Valerie is one of those rare writers with the ability to convey the timeless truth of God’s Word through the lens of her personal experiences in a fresh and relatable way.
In The Finishing School, Valerie writes about the transformative work that God wants to do in each of our lives.
Valerie opens The Finishing School by postulating that most Christians have the desire to lead a refined life – a life that testifies that God daily at work in our lives – but notes that too often, our lives don’t reflect the radical differences they should.
She says it’s not God’s fault – it’s ours – and that often, a lack of change on our part is due to laziness.
As she quotes from James 1:22:
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.
Do what it says.
In The Finishing School, Valerie shares stories from her personal journey of refinement, lessons she’s learned from God along the way, and practical tips we can use in our own lives as we passionately pursue God.
She also includes homework at the end of each chapter – resources to enhance your work – and access to a protected part of her website where you’ll find lots more information and worksheets to truly help you delve deep into the material in this book!
Valerie writes:
My hope is that you will be encouraged in these pages to live out your faith and that people would see your fruit. This doesn’t mean seeking after perfection. It simply means that we look different than we did last year because of God’s work in our lives.
I think that when unbelievers can see our walk – trips and falls and all – that speaks to them too. Let’s be genuine and authentic as we pursue Christ and point to His glory.
I feel that The Finishing School is a highly relevant book that every Christian woman can benefit from. I highly recommend it to you!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
