NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible – Book Review

This week, I attended my first Bible Study at a new church in my community. As I began to prepare for the study, I decided to use the new NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible as part of my preparation process.

This turned out to be quite an eye-opening experience!

First, let me provide some basic information about the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible.

The NKJV Apply the Word Study Bible is designed to help you intimately understand the Bible’s message and apply it to your life. The text of the Bible is written in the New King James Version translation – considered by many to be the best translation for Bible study. The Bible is supplemented with many helpful study aids, including the following:

  • Insightful introductions to the books of the Bible
  • Hundreds of sidebar articles that help you see the relevance of Scripture in everyday living
  • Informative notes about people and places of Bible times
  • Charts, tables and maps that provide abundant Bible information
  • Concordance for helpful reference
  • Full-color maps to illustrate the Bible lands

As I prepared for my upcoming Bible Study, I truly found the notes and insights provided in the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible helpful and insightful. In the passages that I read, I found a balanced blend of notes that addressed Bible culture and geography, Bible figures, and insights and applications into the verses themselves.

Now, here’s where things get interesting.

Once I completed my personal Bible Study using the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible, I pulled out a few additional Study Bibles to supplement my notes, and in the process, discovered that the Bible Study notes in the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible were identical to the ones in the previously released The Modern Life Study Bible (there were just fewer of them!)

So, I began to compare those two Bibles and here is what I discovered:

  • As a Study Bible, the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible (Hardcover Edition) appears to be a condensed, re-packaged edition of The Modern Life Study Bible. It is smaller in size, more portable, contains fewer study notes, highlights the words of Jesus in red, and is the more budget-friendly Bible.
  • The Modern Life Study Bible (Hardcover Edition) contains a more comprehensive set of study tools – is more graphically pleasing in terms of layout, colors, and design – is slightly more expensive – and does not highlight the words of Jesus in red.

Bible Comparison

If you are looking for a good NKJV Study Bible, either of these Bibles are worth considering.

I personally prefer The Modern Life Study Bible because of the extra study notes and the more pleasing design (and because I am currently using my Bible at home) – but, if I were looking for a Study Bible that I was carrying back and forth to church or school, I would lean towards the NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible, which is smaller in size but still plentiful in resources!

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
