Book Of The Month – Called To Community

Called To Community

Called To Community – The Life Jesus Wants For His People – Book Review

Have you ever had the unsettling experience of being in a room filled with people, desiring nothing more than to make an authentic connection with just one person, but leaving feeling disconnected and more alone than ever before?

Ironically, in a world where advances in digital technology have seemingly brought humanity closer together, on a personal level, we are more isolated and further apart than ever before!

Families feel fragmented. Neighbors no longer know one another. Meaningful dinnertime communication has been replaced by television, smartphones, and crowded schedules that make dining together next to impossible.

When Jesus said that He came so that we may have life and that we may have life more abundantly, this is obviously not the life that he envisioned for us.

If you are tired of living a disconnected, fragmented life – if you’re ready to make meaningful connections – if you’re ready to explore the abundant life that Jesus describes in John 10:10 – then Called To Community – The Life Jesus Wants For His People will be of great interest to you!

Called To Community contains a collection of 52 essays that explores the question, “What does it mean to live in Christian community?” The essays are written by some of the great Christian minds throughout time – some historical, some contemporary, from a wide range of Christian perspectives – many of whom have actually lived in community for a number of years.

Rest assured, however – you don’t have to be contemplating life in a spiritual community to enjoy or benefit from this book! The essays are thought-provoking, challenging you to think about many things.

How can we find and create community among the people that God has placed in my life? How do we embrace individuals into our community? How do we as a community serve and impact our culture at large?

Called To Community is the perfect book to read and share with friends. The discussion questions in the back of the book will help you facilitate many fascinating discussions!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Called To Community is available through Plough Publishing House.

Children’s Book Week Feature: God Is Watching Over You

God Is Watching Over You

This week we are celebrating the 97th anniversary of Children’s Book Week – the longest running literacy initiative in our country – a special event designed to foster a life-long love of reading and books in our children!

I believe that for most of us, our love of reading begins at an early age – often, before we are able to read by ourselves. How many of us who are here now have fond memories of someone special in our lives reading bedtime stories to us or sharing their love of books with us when we were still young children?

I recently came across a book from Zonderkidz called God Is Watching Over You that brought back many fond memories of my childhood. This comforting book – written by P.J. Lyons and illustrated by Tim Warnes – reminds children, through delightful rhymes, that all through the day and all through the night, God is watching over them and keeping them safe!

This is a book you and your children will love!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Zondervan for review purposes. The opinions I’ve shared are entirely my own.

Thanks for listing Sci-Fi Summer, Ramona! I’m so excited!

Regarding a book from my childhood I’d like to reread…I had started rereading the Little House series, but fell sorely behind. I’d like to continue with that. Also, a reread of Little Women and the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series. I loved that series and bought it for my sons many years ago, but they didn’t take an interest. Oh well…I really bought them for me anyway. lol

Those are three great series you’ve selected! Know what you mean about buying children’s books for yourself.
I have a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth sitting on my bookshelf from years ago that I am waiting to revisit when the moment is right! 🙂

The first book that came to mind was Morris Has a Cold (from the Morris the Moose) series for little kids. I didn’t actually read it until I was a teenager with younger siblings, but I remember laughing really hard.

  5. Ooooh, going to hunt this book down right now at my library! Thanks for sharing the review!
