Culture by A.W. Tozer – Book Review
In a society where political correctness is often considered more important than biblical truth, it’s refreshing to read books by authors who aren’t afraid to say what is on their minds.
That’s one of the reasons why the writings of A.W. Tozer continue to grow more popular over time. Tozer writes about deep biblical truths that have the power to transform our lives.
Culture – Living As Citizens Of Heaven On Earth – Collected Insights from A.W. Tozer is a wonderful collection of 24 articles that Tozer wrote about what it means to be a Christian in a world that is largely disinterested in Jesus Christ. The book addresses a variety of topics that range from the meaning of church and the veracity of Scripture to science, philosophy and income taxes!
What I like about Culture is Tozer’s emphasis on how we who are citizens of heaven should live out our lives while we are citizens of earth. On every page, he challenges us to shift our thinking, to change our perspectives and to lead holier, more authentic Christian lives.
I was hooked on Culture from the opening words of the book:
One of the greatest hindrances to internal peace that the Christian encounters is the common habit of dividing our lives into two areas – the sacred and the secular. As these areas are conceived to exist apart from each other and to be morally and spiritually incompatible, and as we are compelled by the necessities of living to be always crossing back and forth from the one to the other, our inner lives tend to break up so that we live a divided life instead of a unified life.
If you want to deepen your walk with the Lord and you aren’t afraid of being challenged or convicted as you read the pages of Culture, then by all means I recommend this book to you.
On the other hand, if you’re satisfied with the status quo of your life and do not wish to be challenged in your thoughts, words and deeds, then it’s best that you pass on this book.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I love Tozer! His writing has been foundational to my walk and his lack of PC makes my heart sing! He’s hit a powerful truth here in the Christian not separating their life into categories of the sacred and secular. This is something our Founding Father’s understood well and is at the heart of our nation’s government–though it’s not been interpreted according to their original intent and motivations. A 20th century full of spin has unscrewed truth and emptied the jar of our national identity so tied to Christian principles. Many in the church don’t understand this–but Tozer is not on a lot of pop reading in Christian lit these days, either. He says hard things. More power to him–and to us–were we to take his lead.
Joy!

I love AW Tozer!!! Thank you for the overview of His book! I often tell my Bible Study class that I love reading, “Older Dead Men.” Saints of yesterday may be a better way to phrase that! Your neighbor at Literacy Musings Monday!
