The Candidate by Lis Wiehl – Book Review

It appears I am late to the party when it comes to reading the works of Lis Wiehl – but I plan on making up for lost time. The Candidate is the second book in the Newsmakers series, a story that follows the exploits of heroine Erica Sparks.

Erica is a single mother and cable news host with a complicated and dark past. She’s trying to make a better life for her family while not backing down from the most dangerous stories.

Lis creates an interesting and suspenseful story while developing characters that cause strong emotional connections and responses. This is a key element in any fine story.

The Candidate has many similar plot elements of the 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon which looks at what one government might do to control the U.S. covertly, but in this book, the focus is more on Erica Sparks and her investigative journalistic skills and her love life than pure palace intrigue. The question that ultimately needs to be answered is this: Can Erica prevent a seemingly bloodless coup by a potentially brainwashed legislator and his handlers?

Stepping back and looking at the book in general, the prose is quite good and contains enough twists to keep you guessing throughout the book. The story is divided into small, bite-size chapters of no more than a few pages each which I find helpful in my busy life.

If there is one weakness, the opening lines of many of the chapters are clipped and sound more like stage directions than the wonderful story telling exhibited the rest of the time. However, that flaw has not dissuaded me from continuing the series. I enjoyed this book so much that I am now reading the first book in the series and am anticipating the release of the third book later this year.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
