Why Is Bible Journaling Important? Inspiration And Tips

NLT-Reflections-Bible-Bullet-Journaling-Create-With-Joy

If you are looking for a meaningful way to deepen your relationship with God, then the spiritual discipline of Bible Journaling is for you! No matter where you are in your spiritual life – whether you’re seeking God or embracing His goodness, whether you’re living in fear or walking in faith, whether you’re growing in your knowledge of God or building a spiritual legacy to pass on to your kids – Faith Journaling in your Bible can help get you there.

To help you start or continue your journey, I’ve teamed up with Tyndale House to offer you the chance to win a brand new NLT Reflections Bible in Ocean Blue Hardcover Cloth – and I’m sharing a few pages from my own NLT Reflections Journaling Bible along with tips, products and resources that will help you record your spiritual journey. Be sure to Enter our Bible Journaling Giveaway and subscribe to my blog so you don’t miss a single post!

Last week, I shared tips on how to start journaling in a new Bible . I showed you how you can begin to personalize your Bible by decorating the cover, and how to start responding to the passages in the Bible that are speaking to your heart. As we discussed, you don’t have to be an artist to be a Bible Journaler. You can start creating simple yet beautiful pages with just a few basic products such as colored pens, stickers, and washi tape.

Backside Of Bible - Sakura Micron Pigma Pens

This week, I am Bible Journaling on the back side of last week’s page because my reading and reflections complete the “Being Brave” theme on the tab. This is what the back of last week’s Bible Journaling Page looks like. I created the original page without any page prep – I wrote directly on the Bible page without using a page primer such as gesso to create a barrier between the ink and the page. I did this intentionally because I wanted to share that all Bible paper – even Journaling Bible paper – is still relatively thin, and no matter what type of pen you use, you are likely to experience some level of ghosting (visibility) which is different from actual bleed-through.

For most people, this isn’t an issue at all. However, if you find even minor ghosting distracting, I want to show you how you can use a tip-in to easily cover up any ink that shows through the flip side of your page!

Being Brave - Real Life Single Page

You can make your own tip-in by cutting scrapbook paper down to size and can attach it with washi tape as a hinge to create a flip-up page that covers hidden journaling – but I chose to use a pre-designed tip-in from the Illustrated Faith Word Art book as the back-drop to my Bullet Journaling and used Erin Condren Washi Tape and adhesive to tape it down (since I wanted to cover up the ghosting, not hide additional journaling). I also used the Illustrated Faith Tabbie, #RealLife, to denote that I was dealing with a real struggle – but nothing that was too big for God to handle!

Now here’s the story behind this week’s Bible Journaling entry, Being Brave – Real Life:

Bible Journaling Page with Devotional

This Bible Journaling Page is the companion page to Being Brave – He Will Fight For You (flip side of page) and is my second entry in this Bible.

I’ve been reading The Prayer Of Protection Devotional which takes you on a 90-day journey through Psalm 91, the Psalm of Protection. As I read through this devotional – which really breaks down each part of this Psalm – I am reminded of who God is and that, no matter how big our problems may seem to be, they are not too big for El Shaddai – God Almighty!

Our help comes from the Lord – the Maker of Heaven and Earth (Psalm 121).

God is our Refuge – our Fortress – our Dwelling Place – our Deliverer – our Strong Protector!

Recording these things in our Bibles makes the unseeable, the unquantifiable, the undefinable, the intangible things of God very real – something we so desperately need when we feel weak, helpless and under attack.

That’s why Bible Journaling is so important and so powerful. Our thoughts are fleeting; if we don’t write down our insights, they’ll be lost forever.

Take the time to journal your precious moments with the Lord. You’ll not only remember them, you’ll create a firm rock and solid foundation on which your faith can grow and flourish!

How do you squeeze a lot of information into the tight space of your Journaling Bible’s margin? Bullet Journaling is a concise and helpful technique! After finding my original prose a bit to wordy for the space I had to work with, I pared my message down to the bare essentials, then used my color-coordinating Sakura Pigma Micron Pens and a few dot stickers to convey its essence!

Washi Tape is beautiful for decorating, but it can also be a useful to tool for squeezing more Bible Journaling into tight spaces! I can’t imagine living without this Neon Washi Tape Set from Oriental Trading – the colors are stunning and the width is perfect for labeling and journaling!

Sharpie Fine Point Permanent Markers make a perfect companion to Washi Tape for journaling – the ink is permanent and dark enough to show up over the Washi Tape (just make sure you don’t use these markers to write directly on your Bible pages as they WILL bleed through!)

I’ve been Bible journaling since around the holidays in 2015, but am always learning something new. I love your bullet point idea. I’m no artist so my journaling is usually the passages that stick out and then I can go back and remember what I thought about when I visited the scripture. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I have a Bible journal Bible. I do not journal as much as I used too or should. I got annoyed with my “special Bible Journaling pens” bleeding to the other side or “ghosting”. Thanks for the tips. Now I want to get back to it.
