Fat And Faithful by J. Nicole Morgan – Book Review
It’s been close to two decades since I sat in the packed church filled with tiny Lilliputians and listened to our tall, skinny pastor share his personal bias against people who were obese, but it’s a moment indelibly etched in my memory. If you’ve long left your skinny-girl days behind you, or you have a family member who is larger than life, than you’ll understand what I mean when I say that in that moment, I just wanted the earth to come and swallow me up whole!
When you struggle with your weight, you become very sensitive to how people respond to superficial things like the size and shape of your body rather than the things that truly matter – your heart, intelligence, values and gifts.
Although we may be hurt by these attitudes out in the world at large, we expect more from the body of Christ, so when we come face to face with people whose hearts have not yet been transformed, their words sting like ice cold water thrown across our face.
J. Nicole Morgan understands what I’m talking about. In her new book, Fat And Faithful: Learning To Love Our Bodies, Our Neighbors, And Ourselves, she shares her personal story about what it was like to grow up oversized and loving Jesus, and the insights she learned along the way about how to care for the image of God found in ever person and every body – including our own.
Fat And Faithful provides both personal lessons and biblical insights into why we should not be ashamed of ourselves, but accepting ourselves the way we are. She reminds us that no matter what size we are, we are given gifts to use to build up the body of Christ and to serve the community around us.
If you struggle with your body image, I encourage you to read Fat And Faithful. Morgan provides a lot of inspiration on how to honor our temples so that we can more faithfully honor God.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
