Review Of The NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible

If you’ve ever written a book review and wondered if your commentary makes a difference to the publishers, I’m thrilled to receive confirmation that it does!

Three years ago, I reviewed the NIV Zondervan Study Bible – an amazing resource that I felt deserved 5 out of 5 stars based on its content – but which I downgraded to a 4 out of 5 stars based on readability issues, writing:

The size of the Bible text is actually the same size as the study notes – making it extremely difficult to read!

Imagine my surprise when I received this update from Bob Gaudet, the Senior Marketing Manager of Zondervan Bibles, on September 14, 2018:

We are pleased to announce that we have improved this Bible by re-typesetting it in our exclusive NIV Comfort Print® font. Not only did that make this Bible more readable, it also reduced the page count by 350 pages.

We re-named this Bible to better reflect the what it does best—using biblical theology to trace the themes of Scripture. It is now the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible.

I’m excited to share that these changes make a significant difference in the usability of this Bible!

NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible - Font Comparison

As you can tell by the title, the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible remains committed to its original focus on Biblical Theology by tracing, through a series of articles, how the themes of the Bible are progressively revealed throughout Scripture and come into focus through Jesus Christ. However, the print is now a little larger, the font is a little more legible, and the Bible is a little lighter, making this invaluable resource a much easier Bible to use!

The newly revamped NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible features the same great content as the original, which includes:

  • Comprehensive introductions to each book of the Bible that examines its purpose, theme and context.
  • 20,000 verse-by-verse study notes that offer meaningful insight on every passage of Scripture.
  • 28 theologically rich articles by biblical experts like Tim Keller and Kevin DeYoung that deepen your understanding of theological concepts.
  • Hundeds of full color photos, 90+ maps and 60+ charts – conveniently placed within the text.

  • A user-friendly, single column text layout with extensive study features within the text.
  • The full text of the New International Version (NIV), the most widely read Bible translation in contemporary English, trusted for its combination of accuracy, readability, and beauty.
  • Over 60 trusted contributors.
  • Cross-references and the NIV Comprehensive Concordance.
  • Single-column, black letter edition with two ribbon markers.
  • Exclusive Zondervan NIV Comfort Print® typeface in a 9.1-point print size.

If you are looking for a comprehensive NIV study Bible to aid you in your studies, the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible is worth your consideration.

I rate this Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow, that is great that your comments were considered! I have been almost frozen, having a hard time deciding on a new study bible. I really like the NIV translation, but these days there are so many choices, and so many of them are hard to read. I’ll have a look at this one!
